Why the sudden change to the Canadian Anthem?

For years, NHL games started simple:

If both an American and Canadian team played, then both anthems were sang.

Usually both in English.

Occassionaly, the Canadian anthem in French.

Now it is routinely sang half English and half French.

What's up with that?
