The owner of my local decided it's time for him to move his family... Met the new potential owners today... First thing they did was tell me how stale the cigars were - based on the fact that they weren't "squishy"...

They jacked the humidifier up to 85 and then went through and showed me all the stuff they plan to get rid of... Sounds like they want to keep mostly RyJ and get rid of anything Ashton, LAdC, AB, Pretty much anything they didn't recognize from gas station humidors...

Not sure whether to cry or punch a hole in the wall...

Make them an offer to buy all of the ones they don't want, then quit a week later.

Take this as an opportunity to school them on cigars.

tried to tell a guy in Tulsa he had mold in the humi once... he treated me like an idiot.. the humidifiers were prolly at 100% and had been for a long time... he was proud of that mold... 😟

Similar thing at a shpo where I used to live...........RH WAY too high........Over a dozen boxes of open Acids, with no cello, making the entire small walkin aroma simply disgusting.

At about 60-65 degrees, how long do I have before the 80-85% humidity ruins the cigars?

That's what I actually did with the previous owner... It took a long time to convince him to trust me, but eventually he put me in charge of the walk in... It's not an entirely thankless endeavor, but close enough that I doubt I have it in me to do it again with the new owners... And the big difference is the original owner knew he didn't know what he was talking about... I think this new guy thinks he's a genius...

Too many factors to give you an accurate guess....

Cello on or off?

Boxes open versus closed......

Cigars on top versus those under a few layers.....

Skinny vitolas will suffer sooner..........and so on

5 - 7 days?..........if they really are setting them at 85rh

I suggest you offer to purchase whatever inventory you want from the discard pile and get it out of there before the rh gets too high.

Ask the new owner of they are cigar smokers before offering to correct situation. If they insist on ruining the cigars, you might as well look for other work.

If you have an alli in the old owner, perhaps he could put in a good word with new owner or future employer.

Sucks when ignoramuses take over and ignore advise.

Turn the rh back down and plead ignorance then follow the spacklers advice.

If it's inventory that you want to buy for yourself, don't worry about it too much, it takes a long time to truly wreck a cigar with high humidity. They will absorb the humidity quickly, but you can always bring them down in your humidor by leaving the boxes open. So long as they don't start growing mold, the worst that will happen in the short term is that the feet will expand and crack the wrapper leaf down there a bit and you have to wait a month or so to smoke them before they dry a bit.

Ugly cracked wrappers make it tough to sell the cigar..................so the worst that can happen is actually pretty bad imho as far as the shpo owners.

.............with respect to Opel??

As noted above........offer to buy the best that they don't want.........at stupid prices.........who knows.........they seem somewhat stupid......you may get some great cigars for a song

Typically over humidification cracking occurs around the foot and only extends up maybe 1/4". It'll usually be a few small cracks rather than one big one. I've seen a cigar burst it's band due to storage and swelling, but never one split entirely in storage. I have seen them split when smoking though. Yeah, it can make the cigar hard to sell, but it sounds like the new owners don't care about selling these particular cigars anyway, so Opel could even use a few split feet to his advantage in pricing negotiations.
