My streak of 67+ years of not being in the hospital has ended. Not feeling well last week ( Tuesday) I went to the Dr. Who after an X-Ray told me I had pneumonia. I figured no big deal, take the meds & get better. Went back Thursday& felt better. By Friday night I was a lot of pain & Saturday after an early morning call to the Dr., I was off to the ER. After an exam, X-ray and then a cat scan, I was told that in addition to the pneumonia, I had blood clots in my lungs & left leg & was admitted immediately. I was told that I would be getting blood thinners administrated via a needle in my stomach to immediately start the thinning process. Being EXTREMELY needle phobic (even going for blood tests are a traumatic experience) I went into panic mode asking about all other options. None are available. So here I am getting these 4 fuggin needles a day waiting to be put on Coumadin tomorrow. However, the Coumadin takes a few days to work so I will be getting the shots until further notice.

At least I won the bed pan fight. I told him there was no way I would use the bed pan & after a few choice words & phrases, he said ok to bathroom use. I mean WTF, I can still walk.

At least the pneumonia is gone.

I now realize how lucky I have been.

Dr. Told me no stogies for at least 3/6 months ( we will revisit that) & no cranbery juice. I guess I drink the Vodka straight.

Hang in there and follow the doc's orders. And yes consider yourself lucky. One of my grandfathers died at the age of 62 from pneumonia due to not going to the hospital as advised by his doc.

Better days ahead!

I hope you get well soon.

In my own experience, you should do what your doctor tells you. By your handle I assume you are a car guy. Do you just drive your cars until the wheels fall off or do you service them when needed? Same principle applies with your health. YMMV

Streetrod.

I know it's never much help to hear someone say, it's not a big deal. But I honestly can say just that.

I've been on Coumadin for a little over 6 years now. Thank God my blood typically stays in range. Mine tends to thicken up slightly in the summer when I enjoy the fresh veggies from the garden. The only side effect is that when I get cold, it's hard to warm up. I usually just take a hot shower and I'm all good.

As for the injections. I had to have them after my shoulder surgery. The surgeon had me off Coumadin for a few days prior to limit my bleeding. My wife had to give me my injections in my stomach. I was kinda freaking out because I was scared for her. I was nervous she would freak out and screw up somehow.

Let me tell you the shots are nothing. They feel like an intense mosquito bite. Much less than a bee sting. Not painful at all. The medicine burns more than the stick. I assure you, it's not bad at all. Much less than a normal shot.

All that said, good luck and listen to the dr.

Good you went in.

Biggest health mistake I ever made was not taking proper care of a pneumonia back in the mid 80s when I was still invincible................dang near killed me.

When you take Coumadin there is more you cannot have. Get the list from the doctor. Grapefruit, Kale, and Spinach are the 3 I remember off the top.

With PEs, the risk of getting up out of bed to take a dump is your life.

Just saying. You didn't win a fight, you accepted an unreasonable risk level. Doesn't seem like much but it truly is a life or death issue.

Hope it turns out well. Despite your ability to post here, you are most definitely in critical condition. Doesn't take much with pulmonary embolism to go from I'm here to I'm dead.

You still partial to pansies?

Get good and Get out.

Be safe, my friend.

That's some Scary ****. I am glad that you are recovering and on your way to being healthy. Hospitals are Scary! Pneumonia is Scary! I lost my father when he was 62 to Pneumonia. He had prostate cancer that brought him to the hospital for surgery twice. It was after the second surgery that he died from complications(Pneumonia). I was 26 and I miss him everyday! I have learned that there are many instances where patients of various illnesses have contacted pneumonia after operations they had in hospitals. Why the Hell is that?

I will pray that you get well and stay out of the hospital.

Not completely sure but I think it has somethin to do with lying on your back or lack of exercise and stuff... that's why they make you blow into those little air boxes with the floaty thing... 😟

Dan, I'll first say that I don't know ANYTHING about Streetrod's ailment, condition, etc. But, jeez....even in total ignorance of the risks, I applaud him and I'd be the same way. Mental attitude is as important as good care, IMO. Sometimes more important. Clearly his care staff (or you) hasn't conveyed what the risks might be. Maybe if they did, he could make a better informed decision about what to fight. Absent that...and with Dr's apparent concurrence, he's managed to take a step in the right direction, IMO.

Fight on, Streetrod! And get well.

I'm glad you're feeling a bit better. Being on Coumadin/Warfarin SUCKS!

Watch your vitamin K, no cranberry, having to watch every cut/scrape...

We're dealing with it one day at a time.

This is correct, I had the 1st round of PE in '08, stayed a week in the hospital, but they were all in my lungs (already passed through my heart, none in legs which can break loose and go directly . Did the coumadin for a while, went through tests, etc. I don't have the genetic type, so after 6 months was taken off the coumadin. While my grandson was in the hospital for a month during '09, I began to feel the same way as the 1st round, extremely painful as it is causing your lungs to become blocked off and starving the outer edges of each lobe, (this caused scar tissue) started back on the coumadin myself.

My wife is and RN and pitched a fit when I wouldn't go to the ER. I set up another Catscan, but it was done in a clinic on a Friday, so I snuck off before they could read the results and put me back in the hospital. By Sunday when she took me to the Walk-in care clinic, I was therapeutic so avoided the hospital stay, but yes it was a dangerous thing to do.

Long story short, glad they caught it in time, I was in my late forties, I was flying regularly, and not taking care of myself, poor diet, etc, but not smoking tobacco then, and now have been on Coumadin for years now, and like the doc says as well as Mattie and speyside, they will give you a list of definite don'ts. I still eat an occasional salad, but avoid Grapefruit and cranberry juice. Mine stays pretty regular, and you will have to be tested (called a protime) on a monthly basis.

Hang in there, and listen to the docs

Pneumonia and clots are serious stuff. Where did you get your medical degree? Stubborn U? Listen to the person with the medical degree. The life you save may be your own.

Step back for a second and look at the situation. For your own good. ......please.
