Spanish variety (persuassion?), no seeds, not astringent.

Not bad at all. sort of like a cross between an apple and a pear. This kind supposedly is eaten while firm as opposed to other types that have to soften almost to the point of going rotten.

Any experts?

I've seen some old golf drivers and fairway woods that were made from persimmon wood. guess that was state of the art years ago.

I had three persimmon trees cut down in my back yard a couple weeks ago.. The tree cutter dude said they were of the male species cause they never produced fruit.. I used some of it to smoke some stuff tho.. was ok I guess... didn't notice a flavor really.. 😟

I like them, a bit of an old southern thing. My granpa used to pick persimmons off the branch with an open site .22

Two common types out here in my area: Fuyu and Hachya. Fuyu you eat when firm, Hachya you let get mushy before eating. Hachya are the acorn shaped ones, fuyu are the flatter round ones.

I can't stand either one. They're like latkefruit to me.

I love persimmons. Persimmons fresh, persimmon pudding, persimmon pie, persimmon cake, persimmon gumbo............ And the wood is great stuff, beautifully checked, warm color and hard as a rock. I've made everything from hiking sticks, to knife scales, to hair spikes for my wife and daughter.

Never have eaten pansies though.

Odd. Our persimmons fall in late Sept maybe into Oct.

My parents have 2 trees on their land and one drops a ton of fruit. Actually some limbs have broken due to all the weight.

I love the taste of RIPE persimmons. Hard to explain but maybe kinda like a cinnamon, spice, sweet potato or pumpkin pie. Now a green persimmon is the most bitter thing you will ever taste in life.

My grandfather showed me a trick with the seeds. If you split one open they are black with white in the middle. The white is in the shape of a knife, fork or spoon. This shape indicates how cold the winter will be. Knife is the coldest and spoon is mild.

I don't know if there is any truth to this but there is a utensil shape when you split a seed. Kinda cool story though.

Pretty much this. An unripe persimmon is terrible. They have to go through a hard frost to become edible.

Never really cared for them. But, when I was a teen I found one in the woods behind my grandma's house. Used to hang my tree stand near it. Killed a few deer who were eating drooped fruit.
