1792 is an acquired taste ... the casing they use (tonquin) is unique. But, IMO, 1792 is not inherently bad, at least not from a quality perspective.
Drugstore tobacco is usually very low-quality leaf. Add massive quantities of humectant and cheap aromatic casing, and you're guaranteed to produce a lousy smoking experience.
That said, my personal favorite for worst pipe tobacco is just about anything made by Cornell & Diehl (under their own name, not tobaccos they make for other labels). Their stuff is priced and tinned like premium pipe tobacco, but it's pretty low-grade tobacco, and the blending always seems to be just a little bit off. I remember getting sample bags at pipe shows, trying a dozen blands, and they all sucked. Nice people, crummy product.
FYI, that Lane email had some great prices. Last I knew, B&M's pay at least $100 for five-pound bags of that stuff. So $27.50 a pound isn't bad. You probably already know this, but:
RLP-6 ----> Captain Black Original (White)
1Q ----> Captain Black Royal
MV-1000 ----> Captain Black Gold
Supposedly, the bulk versions use a higher grade of leaf than the pouch/tinned versions. At the very least, they have far less PG. I'm not a big Lane fan, but I'll smoke MV-1000 if it's all that's available.
