It all started innocently enough. My youngest son did the Bourbon Trail a few years back with friends and has been trying to get his brother and I to make the trip with him to the KY state. It all came to pass this past Thur. I was looking forward to spending time with the son’s but was kind of meh on the Bourbon Trail. I have only purchase a couple of bottles of bourbon since 1983 (until the trip) and that was for my wife to use in cooking. I began drinking blended scotch in college and never looked back after discovering single malt in 1983.

We arrived in Louisville early Thur afternoon and toured the Louisville Slugger plant. I really enjoyed the tour having played baseball as a kid and used Louisville Slugger bats. We had to scratch our plans to go to a cigar bar that night due to me coming down with some sinus and sore throat crap.

Our plans were not to do the entire trail and I thought we would probably do no more than five distilleries in two days and then back to sweet home Alabama. As it turns out we visited a total of eight distilleries, did four complete tours and one tasting tour.

We did tours of Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, Jim Beam and a tasting tour at Heaven Hill. In addition, we visited Four Roses, Willett and Makers Mark. I think I’m correct in saying that Buffalo Trace and Willett are not official trail distilleries. As it turns out I enjoyed the distilleries way more than I thought I would and the tastings after each tour were not bad either.

My sons are pushing and dragging me to the dark side (bourbon). I will never give up single malt scotch and now I just have to figure out what to do with the six bottles of Kentucky Bourbon I returned home with.

I ran into a guy once who did the distillery tour and he just raved about it. I've also been underwhelmed by the new bourbon craze. I was a bourbon lover when bourbon wasn't very popular and moved to single malt scotch for a while thereafter. Now I find single malt is getting too expensive and I'm more inclined to drink brandy.

Yeah, I can help you out with any bottles not sent to Whistle-stop.

Would "War Eagle" help my cause?

For either a Buffalo Trace or Woodford bottle, I might even say "RTR 16" once. quietly, and with great shame, but yeah for those bourbons I have a price!
