Any dunhill pipe lovers out there? I have been collecting them and have had the opportunity to buy some rare ones. Any love from cbid?

I love Dunhill pipes, but am not able to justify the coin it costs to collect them.

The only one I have is a straight Tanshell, and it is one of my best smokers. Was able to pick it up estate style for only 120 bucks. It is probably the only one that I will ever have, barring coming across some great deal somewhere.

I don't actively collect much anymore, but when I did, I leaned more towards classic GBD pipes.

They play far above my pay grade.

Can't imagine they can do anything a cob can't do. Cheap briars suck, but a good cob is even cheaper, and smokes well.

I'll stick with my cobs.

I'm in the market for some collector Dunhills.Like the rest of my briars ........they'll rest on the mantel and look pretty.I smoke cobs exclusively.

It seems to me that each brand does a few pipes very well. For example, GBD has the best smoking rhodesians around. IMHO. Dunhill does an awesome billiard and bent billiard (120). I should not have used the word collect. I smoke them also lol.

I for sure have some that do the same thing (LC and Harvard). I smoke the rest on a regular basis. Some good more love than other due to their size. Some one the ODA or ODB don't get AS much smoking time because I just don't have the time for a full bowl.

I'm not a pipe guy but this guy is about 45 minutes from me. I visit his shop for cigars occasionally. His pipes are supposedly world famous. It doesn't look like he has too many on the web site but his shop is full of them.

They, father and son, make the pipes there.

They have some good looking pipes.

Both the father and the son are good guys. They have a nice store with a smallish humidor for cigars. A nice smoking area is located upstairs.

I've bought and sold a lot of Dunhills. For sure, they are the classic English pipe, but I've always found smoking quality to be all over the map. Seems like they lost their mojo for a while in the 70's or 80's but got it back. I only have one smokable Dunhill now, a bent Apple that is dedicated to Escudo. I also have a patent billiard sitting around that I need to get a new stem for; it's a nice pipe, but I'm not a straight-billiard guy.

Everyone's tastes are different, but my favorite English pipes are probably (in no particular order) pre-Lane and Lane-era Charatan, family-era Sasieni, Ferndown, and Upshall. I have a pre-Lane long-shank Charatan Dublin - it would be a Canadian if the bowl were shaped differently - that'll go to a new home when they pry my cold dead fingers away from it. Same thing for a couple Ferndowns, and a Four Dot Sasieni that I found in a ten-buck lot of garage sale pipes.

I've also bought and sold a ton of GBD's (I used to refurbish and sell estate pipes), and managed to hang onto a few with the clear Perspex stem. They smoke really well.

Old Ben Wades are quite nice also. If you ever find one stamped "Leeds," hang onto it with both hands. The Leeds factory was destroyed in World War II, so that is an old pipe. The ones I've had are smallish but great smokers. Stupid me, I sold them (for stupid money 🙂.
