The wife and I are/were considering purchasing the local smoke shop... owner has been so busy elsewhere in the state, he threw me the keys to the place three weeks ago to try the it out and I haven't seen him since...

Well, after 3 weeks of keeping my own records, the shop is making less than $300 profit a week right now... nowhere near enough to make things worthwhile...

well in 4 days, the shop won't even be making that much, as the California 21 and over tobacco law goes into effect... I figure about 1/4 of the business is 18-20 year olds right now...

and even though you only have to be 18 to get your marijuana card, the utensils you smoke it out of are marketed as "For tobacco use" unless you buy right from the marijuana dispensary...

Then this morning, news of a new law clearing the senate emerged... basically it would only allow tobacco stores - where 60% of sales or more are from tobacco products - to sell any and all tobacco products... that would make the local shop the only place in this town of 10,000 (and a frequent pit stop for freeway travelers) where tobacco could be sold...

All of it makes me glad I'm not currently an owner of any establishment where tobacco is sold in this state and makes me feel sorry for the people who are... the government makes decisions that destroy peoples livelihoods in the name of stopping adults from making their own decisions... even though I'm not directly effected by it, it's saddening...

First......glad you got to "see" things first hand!
Math doesn't look good.
However, if this law will actually be enforced, and the shop would in fact be the ONLY place in town to get cigs, and other tobacco...............well...........maybe.
Just seems like all it would take is one law change, or a competitor or three to put the shop right back where is is now........hanging by a thread.
