Where in Switzerland are you going? I like Zurich slightly better then Geneva. That said the Matterhorn is nice also. There is an awesome cigar shop in Geneva.

We loved Lucerne. Enjoyed Interlaken as well and they had a small Casino where they still have my $$. We did take a day trip up the Alps and took a cog rail up to the peak of Jungfrau(?) beautiful but watch out for the thin air at altitude. One beer and your done.

Isn't that where Sven is located? Probably should look him up heard he has quite the collection and is a superb tour guide.

Have fun TJ sounds like an awesome vacation to me.

Been several times, mostly for work back in the 90s (pharma companies)
and a few vacation trips to Europe in general.
Very interesting country.............more like 3 countries really.
You can't go wrong going anywhere.
Took my wife on one of the biz trips, and she still to this day raves about the "glacier express" in Zermatt (train).............I didn't go, had to work.
Others have told me the same thing..............so that might be considered a must see.

Only really passed through Zurich and Geneva, hit most of the small watchmaking towns in the Jura. Basel too.
Always business, I never had to plan anything just get on the train, plane or car. I like all of what I've seen, many people speak English and lots of the signs are in English as well.
Wish I was going again.

Have fun and hope you like fondue!

My dad asked if I wanted to go with him in October. He wants to see as much of the country as possible in 7-8 days, so we wont be standing in one place for too long. He has Parkinsons and doesn't like to sit around long as he knows his travelling days are definitely limited. He just got back from a 5 week trip in Russia/Siberia and we are headed to Alaska in the next few days to fish. He hasn't slowed down too much yet!

Definitely want to check out a nice cigar shop or two. Also will most likely buy some sort of Swiss timepiece for a souvenir. Going to need to do some research on a few of the ideas listed about.

Thanks for the input.

edit:

Also, if you have and great restaurant or hotel recommendations, it would be appreciated. We will be planning and booking the trip ourselves. Will probably fly by the seat of our pants at times I'm sure.

In Interlaken, the Hotel Beau Rivage.
Restaurants- the Swisd House in Lucerne.
Also -not sure if it is still around but a restaurant called The Alpenblick was a boutique type place that did an incredible multi-course dinner for our group many years ago. It was about a 20 minute ride from Interlaken.

I stayed in Gwatt, Switzerland once, way back in the 70s when I was in the Air Force. It's on the other end of the Thunersee from Interlaken.

It was a Beautiful place!

Yes,
Been there.

Interlaken area is great.

We took the trog- train up the Jungfrau...
(Eiger sanction movie w/ Clint Eastwood)
It was a TOTALLY CLEAR DAY,
ZERO CLOUDS,
FRIGGIN' amazing 360 degree views.

****#7 madspackler
I TOTALLY AGREE 110 percent!!-
D.O. N.O.T. DRINK A BEER UP AT THE
TOP CAFE....
IT RUINED MUCH OF THE LAST HALF OF MY TIME UP AT THE TOP...
I ALMOST PASSED OUT, AND FELT LIKE CR#P
The whole ride down....
Again , do not drink alcohol at the top.

Since that time, I refuse to drink on any airline flights either....same thing happens...
From ages 18 to 32 , no problem drinking at any altitude...I hit 33 and it TOTALLY changed.

THE Lake CUMO AREA is amazing...
Try and take a picture of "one piece of trash/litter"
In Switzerland anywhere...you won't...there is none anywhere...I never even saw a junkyard...

The highway system is the 2nd best in the world
After Germany....
Switzerland has four & 6 lane highways everywhere
Including going up mountains "double stacked"
On top of each other....many WIth TUNNELS...
AND IN THOSE TUNNELS ARE DOORS EVERYWHERE
LEADING TO UNDERGROUND SHELTERS filled with food, water, weapons and ammo OUT THE AZZ.

DRIVE OVER THE ALPS on the skinny snow covered no guard rail road over to Germany...it is the scariest drive you'll ever do ( except for the mountain roads in Columbia, Peru and Chile)....because YOU ARE ON THE OUTSIDE EDGE OF THE ROAD GOING UP the swiss alps AND the outside EDGE going DOWN into Germany...
Prepare for massive tour busses barreling down the Switzerland ALPS side coming from Germany that are so WIDE they are in your lane and you are inches from death
On your right...no guard rails.

Have fun !!!!

DRIVE along the Rhine both in GERMANY..through the vineyards...it looks like what HEAVEN must be like.
