I'm going to take the plunge and buy some CC's. I hear a lot of comments that praise the taste but complain about draw burn or other construction issues. For my first try at Cubans I'm not looking to spend Cohiba prices. This is not about taste, strength or any issue other than draw and construction. I'll research flavor profiles and prices afterwards.

What's the point ? I'd rather smoke a tasty cigar that burns into a canoe, then a great costructed dog rocket.

You don't need to worry about construction problems if you're buying any Cubans from the past 4 or 5 years. Sure, you might get an occasional bum roll, but less frequent than most NC's today.

I would agree the construction quality has improved over the last several years, but believe NC still burn better. If you're going to spend some Cohiba money, but yourself a box of Siglo IV, as Cohiba's construction usually leads the pack. Ring gauge is another factor......Robusto typically have less problems than say a Lancero. Double Coronas are pretty hard to get wrong as well.

that's three words....and not in my top 15....as Robert said, buy two DIFFERENT boxes....or more....or do some splits....

You might buy what many consider to be good 'fresh' lately....

Problem with starting out with Cubans is that it really is true that they will develop over years....it'd be great to find your sweet spot right off the bat and get some aging right away...but that doesn't usually happen. One of my first 'likes' was PSD4. So, I immediately bought a bunch of boxes to start aging. Seven to ten years later, they are better...but nowhere near my favorites now...I wish that I'd bought more HU's and RA's back then for aging, instead of a pile of PSD4's.

Just gotta try a few. If I thought your tastes were anything like mine, I'd say buy:
1 box of HUHC's (great young and I don't know anyone that doesn't like them)
1 box of something in a larger format: Monte2 Diplo2, Lusi...
1 box of rob/corona in big name - Boli/RyJ/RA

Go ahead and smoke through the HUHC's now...either split the other two boxes with trades, or work through them VERY slowly....no more than one every 3-4 months...and carefully note the evolution of the blend....

I was hoping to get some Monte #2. But have heard many horror stories of right draw and hopelessly plugged. I will only buy quality Cubans but after I get a working list of well constructed smokes. I will then research taste. I got votes for Bolivar RYJ and the Monte Edmund Any other suggestions

If using a reputable vendor, buy Monte 2's if that's what you want. The idea that Cuban cigars have construction issues is way overblown.....has been for many years.....Stink's friend's reported experience notwithstanding. Boom years and for a few years after, there were some problems. That is no longer the case..

Good advice so far.

1) Buy some robustos. its a simple size, not likely to have construction issues

2) Quality is a lot better than it used to be, I wouldn't worry too much

3) Store cubans at lower humidity. I like 62%. 70% is probably going to get you draw problems.
