By the way my take on the tax bill in general is the Indians really liked the beads and firewater they received for their lands so all is good! Except the beads in this case disappear in a few years while the land exchange is permanent, as is the forth coming explosion of the deficit like never seen before.

You should care. You pay more for his healthcare when he goes to the hospital after his appendix ruptures. That cost is passed on to you and I. Is this not the way it works?

But, I'd bet the total cost of care for uninsured might be lower than for you and I. Insurance companies MUST be padding the middle cost layers...or they'd all be non-profits, or losing propositions. I say get rid of all health insurance...maybe then we'd finally get some actual competition...and some actual accountability for actual health care costs

If he has insurance then he is paying for his own care, not you and I. The more people who have insurance, the lower the cost. That is how insurance works, right? I'm not trying to be a smartazz; these are legit questions.

I'm totally against the mandate but also think if you don't buy insurance during the time you are supposed to and you get a catastrophic illness you should either die or have to pay up front. I hear there are a lot of nice people in here that will help you as long as the government isn't involved.

cost pools and spreading risk are bunk and actually raise costs. eliminating them will drive prices down to where they should be. going back to the time where you could buy snake oil concoctions that could and actually did kill you is also something to strive for. I guess the comm breakdown is that while I AM trying to be a smartazz, I'm also being serious. But, I wasn't clear about cost alignment. Deliberately so. Because insurance (and BIG med) benefit...no, THRIVE because of the confusion they deliberately create.
I was mixing health care cost AND insurance cost together when I was referring to total care cost. At the most basic, naive level, you're correct. Spread the insurance risk to include people with lower risk than yourself so that your rates cost you less than the actual risk you pose to the insurance company. The mandate thing was meant to force people who are low risk into plans so that fat, old, hypertensive smoking fooks like me can pay lower rates. Doesn't matter that a healthy 22 year old with few risk factors would be better off without any health insurance and could just pay as he goes....and pay less that way. But, unfortunately, its a lot more complicated. Insurance companies aren't non-profits. Big MED has zero cost transparency...so health care costs go into an invisible sausage machine that turns out different prices for different patients, insurance companies, locations...whatever...seemingly at random. We're fucked because we accept it...and trust the insurance companies have our backs....lol...bend over, Phil...nobody's looking out for you and I...especially not Congress, Insurance, your hospital, nor phrama....pick up some lube on your way to your next doc visit
