Expensive, yes, if you buy only one box of something, but if you work the sales and bonuses, you can get the price down to what you would pay in a supermarket or possibly a local butcher shop. Problem with that is, you have to make a fairly large purchase to achieve those savings.
We don't use Omaha Steaks as our primary meat source, but we usually make a couple of "stock up" trips a year, to the tune of around $150 - $200 per trip. It's not all spent on steaks.
There are other things in their inventory that we like too.
If I'm not mistaken, their steaks are "flash frozen" as soon as they are butchered. The meat in a local butcher shop does not get frozen until YOU, if you are so inclined, freeze it. Something to think about, is how long has that meat been "aging",
(for lack of a better word), from the time it is slaughtered in the slaughterhouse, then gets sent to a major distributor, then possibly gets sent to smaller distributors before it winds up at your butcher shop, where they do the final cutting to go into the display case. I guess it depends on what your perception of "fresh" is.
Personally, we have never been disappointed with what we've bought at Omaha Steaks, over the years. Of course, we only buy the "top end" cuts, such as Delmonicos and Rib Eyes, so THAT may play into it. *lol* (
