They had to franchise Cousins because there was no better option. How would they tell their fans they are staying competitive starting Hoyer at QB? The thinking behind the trade for Smith is almost certainly a bridge gap situation. I know they extended him but a lot of those contracts are front loaded with the option to cut him in the later years of the contract at a small cap hit,. I would almost guarantee the Redskins draft a QB this year and if not they will have to next year or be leveraged into overpaying a QB again. I think the thing that will hurt the Skins the most is the CB they traded away not the change at QB. Really good CBs are almost as hard to find as solid QBs.
