Solar powered motion detectors only work when the sun is moving.

Get a dog they let you know when anything is moving.

They do not have the range of the hard wired ones. I prefer the hard wired ones that are light controls. They are great deterrents for intruders. Also, you won't easily know when the cells or batteries go bad.
