Alright, if you can’t drink a glass of good brandy or Cognac and be a man, then don’t run that by my deceased grandfather. He’d be likely to take one of the saws he sharpened to you. He always said to pay a little more for the good stuff. It tastes better than the Christian Brothers junk. lol anyway I bet I pack a gun more often than most on here. As for my taste in alcohol, I can drink Crown Reserve on occasion, most whiskey gives me the runs. Beer? I hate hops. So unless I brew it, I ain’t drinking that swill. I love a good spiced rum, the higher the proof, the better. Finally, I can fix any rig from the ‘80’s and older, but hate these newer Pieces of trash. So am I a man? Depends on your definition. As for how I look at it, I would have to quote Clark Gable on the matter. Frankly, I don’t give a dam......

I feel you man I feel you. Where I come from you just got to show your balls first before you start wearing pink is all. I never could drink Crown anything. That chit is nasty to me, My son loves the stuff but I got the feeling he's more into it because of its name but I will say it gives me the chance to pick on him about the purple sack. I am more of a bourbon, Rum, Tequila guy.

A much better value than an XO Cognac IMHO. It has considerably more age. Same beverage but not from the delineated Cognac region.

As for crown, Reserve comes in a tan colored sack. It has an excellent Vanilla hint with far less harshness to it. I personally like it chilled, neat. I sip it with my cigar. I do the same with Cognac. If I can find Cherry brandy, I love that stuff, but really hard to come by over here. My buddy used to save a bottle for when I headed down to Florida, unfortunately the elderly gentleman who made it passed away 10 years ago, so it has been a while since I had the good stuff. I make a strong oat porter. Just need to be careful how much you drink. It’s pushing 25%

1986 B. Gelas & Fils Bas Armagnac

This Armagnac chit is f#$%ing on to something! I've tried a handful of different houses and ages now and bought a few bottles. For the money, cannot be beat. But some of the prices are starting to creep up there at least on par with bourbons of similar ages. But there are deals to be found.

I just picked up a Dartigalongue cuvee of 2 vintages, with the youngest having been aged for 41 years for 160 bucks. Whats the cheapest 41 yr scotch? And I think Dartigalongue is little on the higher side for price.

I've really enjoyed: Cardinat, Pellehaut, Briat, L'encantada, and some more I can't think of right now. Delord has like a 20 or 25yr at some places for 60 bucks or something crazy.

Cognac seems to expensive compared to similar Armagnac. On the American brandy front I haven't been wowed by much but the Copper & Kings joint in Louisville is doing some really interesting things. Next I'd like to try some Calvados.

The only downside I've found so far is that the normal proof is 80s. I prefer a bit higher proof. K&L wines has imported a few bottled uncut/cask strength but those seem few and far between and now K&L prices are going up and the stuff is selling out FAST.

Edit: a general note that I've found, there is no "straight whiskey" legal equivalent in rum, brandy or other spirits. I'm always trying to seek out other brown spirits that don't have a bunch of added sugar and coloring and other weird additives. In my experience so far, the major cognac and brandy houses add all kinds of **** and the small places seem to be doing it the old way but you have to ask around to find out and even then people could just be lying because its not regulated.
