Each side claims to "like" members from the other side that trend towards the middle.
But when their own side does it they treat them like lepers.
For every R vote lost by McCain for being too far "left", he would need a D vote from those claiming to want a candidate in the middle.

and Bernie won't be at the front for too much longer, not that he ever controlled the party base as he was really Independent but ran D in the primaries. Winning the Independent Party ticket equals no chance. It was a calculated move that was smart and would have worked if he had not been cheated.

I know you really mean free tuition at state schools, not free college anywhere, though it sounds worse to just say free.
