after many instances of justice denied in incidents where cops shoot and injure or kill unarmed and innocent people without criminal charges being filed, or being found innocent when charges are filed, perhaps the legal playing field is leveling somewhat.

In most previous cases, there was a general pattern: white cop kills unarmed black person, cop is not charged or found not guilty at trial, black community protests, Black Lives Matter....

well the law does work...a cop was convicted of homicide for killing an unarmed person...

WTF??? it's a black cop who killed an unarmed white woman...he was found guilty of murder....not sure that woulda happened if the cop was white and the woman was black/minority

When a police officer is charged in a case like this, the D.A. usually makes a minority officer the example. X [frypan]

that's typically the reaction when an unarmed black/minority person is shot and killed by L.E....cop was justified in taking the azzwhole out, even if the circumstances may not have warranted deadly force...

I can only think of one case similar to this one where the victim was black... That was the tragic shooting death of Corey Jones...

The officer in that case was of Pakistani decent... He was sentenced to 25 years for manslaughter...

I would be interested in knowing the percentages of white vs. black officer conviction rates involved with job related shootings (not interested enough to look). If the numbers pointed a certain way then I imagine many in the news media would’ve already had a field day with it. My uneducated guess would be that conviction rates are similar between all police (hardly ever).

Even if it's drivel, even if he does believe it - just like any opinion I don't agree with - i think it's safer and healthier having it discussed in the public square than having it discussed in an echo chamber, or worse yet, having it not discussed at all...

My comment was more about the conviction rates (or lack thereof) of police officers in regards to their race, e.g., do black cops get convicted at higher rates than white cops?

I’m not really surprised by those numbers but wonder if correlation actually equals causation in this particular phenomenon, or are there some other confounding variables at play?

I do not doubt the existence of racism in America, but is it really so prevalent within our law enforcement culture that it’s causing police to shoot minorities at higher percentages? I certainly haven’t seen any definitive evidence that leads me to believe in this hypothesis (admittedly, I haven’t really looked very closely).

My guess would be that a person’s socioeconomic status, age, and where they live plays a much larger role in the chances of getting shot by the police than the color of their skin does.

Murder convictions of police officers are extremely rare, particularly for on-duty use of force killings...doubt if the numbers, which are statistically insignificant, would provide any meaningful clues about racial disparity among police officers in the US criminal justice system...

we tend to give a wide amount of latitude to our police officers and are very reluctant to question their decision-making under extreme circumstances often involving real threats to their own safety
