So I'm posting this here because I can't talk about it on any of my social media... because I don't want to hurt an old friend's feelings, and at least one of the guys involved is dead. But this amused me.

Many many years ago, a fellow bartender of mine fancied himself a bit of a rock-star. He eventually started a rock band in our small town, with a handful of other people I was peripherally acquainted with. He was convinced they were going to make it big. When they chose to name their band, they decided to call it "Must"... now, this was explained to me by the lead singer (my co-worker) that "must" was some periodic time when male bull elephants get a ton of extra testosterone and aggressive. ... he liked watching nature channels high.

He was so stoked about the band name that he had "MUST" in all caps tattooed down his tricep.

I accepted it as he said it... This was in the early 2000s, we didn't have immediate access to information.

I went on my life not thinking about it for years.

About a week ago I saw an article on elephants.... and it referred to the "musth" period for bull elephants....

Yep. A silent "h".

He of course would have never known.... he only heard the word on the nature shows....

But for all those years of his band... and the tattoo.... and the word was... well not the word he intended.

Anyway... not particularly important. Just seemed amusing and... well... a little bit like life itself. And I couldn't tell this story on facebook, because he would see it, along with a bunch of friends who know him and the band... and I don't want to embarrass him.

Look up the word as you spelled it. Dictionary seems to be okay with it spelled either way.

H?mmmmmm, maybe Cliffy's to smart for his own good...or not as smart as he tells us he is/thinks he is....maybe the upbringing, or.....worse:-k

Great story, well told. Frankly I admire your discretion and restraint. Not enough of that anymore. Folks seem to need to share any detail they pick up.

Yeah....sometimes I just know people. Not saying “I told you so” but well, you know. Old Z is always right.

That's actually a bit of a relief to me. Once I saw it spelled "musth" I didn't bother looking any deeper. Looks like it's an accepted spelling as well. Good.

That's definitely not true. I wouldn't say we are close at all.... but that doesn't mean you should want to publicly embarrass someone .... especially if you barely interact with them. We just keep tabs on each other ... probably to be able to inform each other of people we know dying more than anything.

IIRC, "must" is also the term for the grapes and all the stems, leaves and crap thrown in for the first pressing to make wine (or maybe it's what is left after the first pressing). Was your friend, by any chance, run over by a steam roller or stepped on by an elephant? Maybe caught in a wine press? If so, then the tattoo would have been ironically spelled in the proper fashion.

While we're wandering down memory lane... and talking about people who were not so bright...

One night I was working at the bar... it was a "fetish" night, so clientele was a sort of anything goes. At some point during the night I'd met some woman who wanted to go home with me, so I had her wait around while we closed up... this was common, and usually at about 3am it was just us 6 or 7 bartenders/barbacks/security and a5 or 6 "friends" (sometimes it would get a bit more crowded, but not every night)... either hook-ups or girlfriends... They would chill at the bar with a beer while we closed down, counted tips and had a beer ourselves.

Anyway... I had started getting a hinky feeling about this woman near the end of the night. I hadn't really spoken to her at all the entire night (I was working)... so other than the few sentences exchanged to indicate she wanted to go home with me... I didn't know much about her. But as it got later and the crowds lessened, I had more opportunity to talk to her. I don't know what she said... can't remember.... but I recall thinking to myself that it was already too late to line up a different hook up, so I may as well do this one.

So, after we kick everyone else out... we're closing down the bar... having our drinks... just chatting... this woman is asking the group about the bar and I realize she's just... not smart. And I can tell once Corey picks up on it (the Must guy). I can see it in his eyes... because even though he wasn't the brightest, he knew how to play off people. For some reason, the bar owner had come up (the owner of the bar was a gay Cuban immigrant from the Castro era) and this woman exclaimed, with bright, wide eyes "The owner is GAY?" Corey just smiles and says "Nah... he's Cuban"... and I will never forget her reply, as I just had to shake my head and chug my beer... "Are ALL Cubans GAY?"

Corey.... bless his heart just looked her straight in the eye and said "Yeah... and so are the Lebanese".

I tried shuffling her out of there pretty quickly after that so I could get laid and never have to hear her talk again... unfortunately, she kept showing up to the bar (and once my doorstep) after that night. I think Corey slept with her a bit after I told her I wasn't going to again.
