Used AirBnB for the first time. Overall the experience was decent- 3.5 or 4 stars max.

Rec'd an email from the host which in part said this.....

Thanks very much for visiting and I will be sure to leave you your first Airbnb review. This is very helpful since some hosts only allow those to book who have Airbnb positive reviews. We are Superhosts and Airbnb requires us to have consistent high reviews. Hence, why they are very important to us. Your review will post online once you leave your review for our place.

Can't shake the feeling there is a subtext of Hey... say the right thing or (Tony Soprano voice) You might have a difficult time finding a place to stay. Capiche?

Any other AirBnBers feel similarly?

Meh. I would leave the review you feel is appropriate, but yeah, that does seem kind of odd.

Send them the following:

Thank you for following up with me. I understand that as a super host, positive reviews are important for you to achieve, but avoiding a negative review is even more important.

Personally, I have no plans to ever use airbnb again; but you, it's your livelihood. As such, I would like to lay out for you my system of reviews and the various prices for which they can be had.

The $0 review gets you zero stars and the review begins "i awoke to the sounds of menacing looking clowns surrounding my bed and removing my clothing..."

A $500 review gets 5 stars will make your property sound like paradise...

For $250 I can get rid of the molestation but the menacing clowns stay... You gotta pony up for the 5 star if you don't want those guys showing up in the review...

Maybe too many people leave a bad review rather than letting the owner resolve a problem, but that is a veiled threat, IMO.

I do as Mac suggested, especially if you don't plan on a return tip.

I would lower their review one point and include their missive in my review stating that it was why I reviewed them one point less.

Good idea, and I'd use it for the 0 -3 point review in Opoe's schedule.
