Evidently if you fill it with too much water, you get blue balls bouncing out all over the humidor. /doh!

Get some silica beads combined with some Boveda packs, and you ‘re good to go.

Those blue HumiCare thingies work really well. I use them in my coolerdors. In the wineadors I use HumiCare electric humidifiers, and half the time I don't even have them running. The plain old green foam keeps my humidity between 62 and 68.

Yup, fill halfway with distilled water, or occasionally 50/50 solution, but no further than halfway, to allow room for your blue balls to swell (huh-huh-huh)!


Not necessary. The Humi-Care blue polymer balls combined with Boveda packs work perfectly.

If you want to save a lot of money, the same polymer balls are available on Amazon in dried form, and you can just add 50/50 to them, then refill with distilled water and occasionally more 50/50 after that.

The amount of polymer balls in a $10 Humi-Care jar can be had from Amazon for very, VERY cheap, in bulk. You just have to provide your own little jars and your own 50/50 solution.


They sure do, especially along with Boveda packs to do two-way 'trimming' of the humidity. Also the Bovedas self-recharge continually from the blue polymer balls, so all you have to do is refill them periodically, and you usually never have to touch the Bovedas.

I have quite a number of large (116-quart) transparent (can read hygrometer without opening!) Sterilite containers and this works great in all of them, and has for years. Very "autopilot" and minimal maintenance; refilling is rarely required and they stay in a tight RH% range if you don't have temperature swings. If you do, consider coolers instead, as a cooler will make the RH% range ultra-tight and virtually non-varying, even with big temperature swings in the room. Downsides to coolers: thicker-walled and less size-efficient, much more expensive, opaque so you can't read your hygrometer at a glance without opening them and letting in outside air (unless you have a RF transmitting unit with remote screen).

Also: plastic tubs or coolers are FAR superior to traditional wood humidors in every way (except aesthetics of course). If you have wood humidors already, or want one for aesthetics, that's cool but consider making all future containers either plastic tubs or coolers.

I’m sure they work great.
But I’m a lazy bassurd. I have absolutely no interest filling little jars half way with distilled water, or some 50/50 chit........ever. Waaay too much work, and a potential for a mess, compared to my setup.

Beads and Bovedas for me

My way, you refill jars halfway, usually with distilled water, now and then with 50/50 instead.

Your way, you fill a spray bottle with distilled water, then spray beads until they're a certain color/opacity.

Either way, work is involved periodically. I know my way it's very rare, and I assume it is for your way, too.

Both ways, you have to buy distilled water. My way you have to buy 50/50 very rarely too, but it's so dirt cheap it's almost free.

So not a lot of difference. Just preference really: does one prefer to wet one's balls, or spray one's beads? Each man must answer that for himself!

I never have to spray my beads....ever.
Haven’t sprayed them in over 5 years.
They get rehydrated from the Bovedas.
No matter.........both ways are fine.

I just like not having to deal with anything.
I have 25+ big Bovedas and couple pounds of beads for my various storage containers, and probably have to rehydrate 2 or maybe 3 Bovedas....................per year.
That’s the only time I have to do anything with distilled water, and even then, I don’t do anything.
I have an airtight food grade clear container with a container of distilled water already in it.
I just toss in a Boveda, and take it out a week or two later

Oh, neat, so you just recharge the Bovedas. I didn't know that could work!

Now I wonder if I could do the same thing, except with the balls instead of beads. Recharge my Bovedas and they keep the balls charged.

Might have to try it!
