I've never done this here but I've never been through what I am about to share either.
A week and a half ago my stepdad of 43 of my 58 years on this planet had a catastrophic heart attack.He was care flighted that night to a hospital 90 miles away.It took them a week to get him strong enough for open heart surgery which was performed last Friday.My mother has battled C Diff amongst other ailments over the last 5 years or so and has been invalid the last 20 years.On Saturday morning she woke up sick once again from C diff.Her battles with this awful infection had been hitting like clockwork over the last year or so......every 6-8 weeks she'd spend 7-14 days in the hospital and every time reach a near death state before bouncing back.She wanted to take her meds at home and give it a day so my sister and I agreed but if it got worse we'd follow past protocol and call an ambulance.Sunday morning was in fact worse so she took a ride with some boys who have come to know her by first name over the years.Later that evening she was care flighted to Wichita Falls,same hospital as my step dad.She arrived unresponsive and after hours of treatment she remained unresponsive and organs began to fail.We had prepared a Medical Power of Attorney in my step dads absence so this was on me.About 3 o'clock Monday afternoon I had to make the toughest call of my life...….my wife and my sister by my side we decided to remove life support.Then we had to tell our step dad after the fact...….damn near as hard as the first decision.
Mom has passed on,my step dad is doing better today,I had a little episode in the middle of all this so I have a heart cath scheduled for Thursday with a Saturday funeral to follow.
