Killer bees don't go that far north I don't think. Too cold. Those hornets are bad news. They will tear a honeybee hive to pieces. Physically destroy the hive and kill everything in it. Bad, bad news for the beekeepers.

The Japanese honeybee has a defense, they let the scout into the hive, and them jump it forming a cluster of bees around the bigger hornet. Then they vibrate to generate body heat and actually cook the freaking thing. There's an amazing video floating around out there I watched several years ago.

Maybe 2020 is the apocalypse. 👎

They're very large. Honeybees are much smaller.

Newly-Manufactured Wooden Hives: Make them with a limited number of entry/exit holes that are big enough to let in honeybees, but much too small to let in the giant hornets. If for whatever reason this isn't possible or practical, just use the next solution below:

Already-Existing Wooden Hives: Surround the whole hive box with a larger cube of metal window screen material with a number of access holes that are too small for a giant hornet but plenty big enough for the honeybees, and make that enclosing cube of window screen material temporarily removable for periodic maintenance work (tending to the frames, removing honey, etc.) Open, do your work, close. It can be as simple as a lift-off top.

Problem solved easily, simply and cheaply, for both new and existing hives.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIWS  ) consisting of a camera aimed at the entrance/exit hole that's hooked to a computer with a simple AI system that recognizes the difference between honeybees and giant hornets, and shoots only the latter with some incapacitating projectile (even a high-enough pressure water jet would work) or agent (one of the *-methrin family chemicals in a tiny, short, tightly-focused and controlled jet, or something like that).

Yeah, that's right. R2D2's not only for Navy ships anymore! We can make a mini one for beehives, ignoring friendly "planes" and shooting down enemy "planes" only!

Don't laugh. Honebees are INCREDIBLY important to the nation's food supply via pollination. If necessary, something like this WILL be quickly developed, you can bet on it. Unlike in years past, the hardware and software to do this are pretty cheap and widely available, and it wouldn't be hard or expensive to cobble together such a system. It could even be solar-powered!

We might need to import so of those Japanese bees if our bees don't figure out how to fight them. No telling what the unintended consequences for that import might be.
