β€œThe message that was sent was an ugly one and that means we must respond but let's put this behind us, too. Let's overwhelm this one ugly incident with love and compassion,” added Supervisor Jacob.

If masks are mandated, that's a mask. I would say that comes under the 1st amendment protections. If he starts burning crosses in the parking lot or hanging folks then there's a problem.

Otherwise I'd say mind your own affairs and step off. Simple really.

You could be dressed in regular clothing and get your ass beat in south central just for not being black.

Think about that.

I could pass for Korean...lotsa them got their stores blowed up during the King riots...many Korean grocers were attacked and at least one death reported...

during the Watts riots in the 60's, most of my Dad's Chinese competitors who owned Mom n Pop grocery stores near ours
were burned to the ground...some had to run for their lives when rioting and looting broke out...

we, my Dad and Uncle and I, hunkered down in a back storage room, armed with knives (Dad bought a rifle and a pistol afterwards), as rioters tried to break in...luckily the steel accordion door held...LAPD refused to send cops to escort us to our cars...their patrols were getting rocks and bottles and molotov cocktails...we left under cover of darkness...guess the rioters were drunk after consuming all the spoils from the destroyed liquor store across the street...our store survived thanks to a neighbor who extinguished several fires on the roof of the store...business was great many years after the riots, until a couple of giant supermarkets opened in the neighborhood...Dad treated the customers from the neighborhood well, extending credit, helping during times of need, hiring neighbors to help stock the shelves...

rarely do folks guess I'm an American with Chinese heritage...and I get that "so you're a wiseass look" when that's my reply when they ask what I am/where I'm from

Absolutely. British accents and Australian accents, to the untrained ear, sound similar. Southern accents do not necessarily mean you're from Alabama. Could be any of a number of southern states. New England accents don't mean you're from Boston... so yes... white folks do ask other white folks where they're from.

And Santee is known as "Clantee" to many of the surrounding areas of San Diego.

Meh,

Don't give him his 15 minutes of fame. That isn't what San Diego is about. Every city has its underbelly. For every loser like that there is a balance. He isn't what San Diego is about. MACS is, lots of good people are.

You aren't saying Asians get asked what state they live in. It's about roots.

So, in my life experience as one most would consider white yet some consider Jew (I keeed, kinda), I almost always ask everyone I am getting to know about their heritage.

Guess I'm fortunate to have had the exposure to so many people from so many places that I have developed a tremendous desire to learn more about all of these (now) American bits and pieces, perhaps due to the high percentage of positive experiences as my curiosity has taught me so much great stuff...and that always leads to cuisine!

I find that 98.2% of people take my sincere interest as a compliment and love to brag about their culture.
