So I learned a few interesting tidbits today, and I thought they may be something others would find interesting.
Most of this info came from a medical podcast discussing the Spanish flu. The host had pulled her info from a number of articles written about the spanish flu, mostly prior to this current epidemic (to avoid any bias).

Things I found interesting....

Cities had shut down public gatherings, movie theaters, bars, restaurants during this pandemic as well. (Amusingly, apparently theaters were forced to shut down well before bars/restaurants....) And like before, the businessmen eventually demanded the economy re-open early.

Philadelphia held a huge parade in the middle of the pandemic (St Louis cancelled theirs) and a couple weeks later thousands had died of the flu.

Masks were mandated in a number of cities... including San Francisco. A photograph captured the SF mayor at the time at a boxing match with his mask hanging from his ear. He was fined $50.

Just like now, there was a resistance to wearing the masks. Protesters claimed wearing masks violated their rights.

None of this is new.

The masks isn't some liberal plot. It isn't some fascist plot. It's something we've employed for over 100 years now.

Social distancing isn't some liberal plot. It isn't some fascist plot. It isn't even "the new normal". It was employed 100 years ago and then rolled back when it wasn't necessary.

What's more amusing is the people having a fit about it aren't anything new either.

We are not all in this together. We never were.

Many have no sense of community, or care for others - they come first. Who cares if the old or weak die, or even just a random 2-5%. They ain’t gonna ware no mask. And they will rationalize it - 75,000 dead? Hell that may people die from toothpicks.

And they will wave an American flag and belly ache about “their rights”.
Because after all, patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.

Well the most amusing thing about this is that eradicating a virus requires people work together.

If we don't act in a consistent manner across the entire nation, no action will be effective.

States continuing to remain shutdown will not be able to reopen if other states re-opened too early and allowed the infections to persist.

If a cluster of people refuse to social distance, and happen to get infected... well that screws the plan for everyone else.

Being country of "rugged individuals" will in no way successfully deal with a pandemic (other than simply not shut down and take the losses until the entire thing has passed... and that would have been amazingly expensive. But really interesting)

Meh... I don't care. But I'm amused either way

we're a better country today than we were fifty years ago, and definitely better than 100 years ago...but except for a couple of crises, our inability to come together at critical times throughout our history defines who we are: a hodgepodge of competing interests that fractures our responses

Oh yeah, another thing I remember ....

The 1918 Flu mutated into a more deadly form during the pandemic. This is not common, but did apparently happen.

So sitting around waiting for COVID to mutate to something less deadly or virulent may also not be the best option.
