Fed Chair Jerome Powell says that failure to timely provide stimulus will further harm the already shaky economic recovery.

#1 - I think he's right about NOT providing relief money to dem run cities that were effed before the covid hit.

#2 - I also don't think putting the country further into debt will help much.

#3 - Dems are worried about the defecit, unless they want to spend the money.

#4 - I agree that putting off a deal until after the election is seriously poor form, although I don't think we should run another round of "stimulus".

Too little or too late could prove to be a "nail in his coffin" with voters, including even those who won't receive any stimulus money, but want to see the economy recover faster and easier. But, I suspect it is merely a negotiating tactic to get Dems on board with the fact that his SCOTUS pick will ultimately be confirmed. If the Dems capitulate, I am sure Trump would close a stimulus deal.

Fed’s Powell: More relief needed to power recovery
Downward trends could derail economy, chairman says Powell

Associated Press
WASHINGTON — Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell warned Tuesday that a tentative recovery from the pandemic recession could falter unless the federal government supplies additional economic support.

Powell said that government support — including expanded unemployment insurance payments, direct payments to most U.S. households and financial support for small businesses — has so far prevented a recessionary “downward spiral” in which job losses would reduce spending, forcing businesses to cut even more jobs.

But the U.S. economy still faces threats, and without further aid, those downward trends could still derail the recovery, the chairman said.

On Tuesday afternoon, though, President Donald Trump tweeted that he had “instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election.” Trump’s tweet sent stock prices falling.

In his speech earlier in the day to the National Association for Business Economics, a group of corporate and academic economists, Powell said:

“The expansion is still far from complete. Too little support would lead to a weak recovery, creating unnecessary hardship for households and businesses. Over time, household insolvencies and business bankruptcies would rise, harming the productive capacity of the economy, and holding back wage growth.”

Powell noted that the economic recovery has slowed in recent months compared with its rapid improvement in May and June.

Incomes fell in August. And job growth weakened in September, slowing to just 661,000, less than half the gains of 1.5 million in August and 1.8 million in July. The economy has recovered only slightly more than half the 22 million jobs that were lost in March and April.

“A prolonged slowing in the pace of improvement over time could trigger typical recessionary dynamics, as weakness feeds on weakness,” he said.

In a question-and-answer session with economists, Powell noted the pandemic recession has disproportionately harmed in-person service industries, especially restaurants, bars, hotels, travel companies, movie theaters and other entertainment venues.

The heavy damage to those industries has left millions of people unemployed, likely for an extended period, until they are either finally recalled to their previous jobs or switch to new careers.

“The right thing to do and the smart thing to do in the long run is to support those people as they return to their old jobs or find new jobs,” the chairman said.

A $2 trillion financial rescue package that Congress approved in March, as well as previous aid measures, were “truly extraordinary,“ Powell said, enabling U.S. households to pay bills and maintain their spending even as unemployment soared to 14.7% in April.

The mindset of the Santa Claus voters.

Did the Legislative Branch furlough themselves? They're the ones with the purse strings NOT the Executive Branch. He just signs or vetoes what they put in front of him, but I digress. Civics in school should be taught.

When the Kenyan King was spending like a drunken sailor ( no offense to drunken sailors, but the analogy is the closest I can muster on a single cup of coffee!) on Biden's 3 letter word, J-O-B-S I was documenting the government waste. Bailing out auto companies that will either need another one or were sold off, hundred of millions of "green" energy contracts awarded but they went bankrupt as soon as they got the money and the coup de grace of it all...not persecuting a single Wall Street or Federal Reserve executive (that little mom & pop firm doesn't count.) for the fraudulent accounting and practices that caused the financial meltdown. Where were you during all of this X? Providing cover for them. Giving them a pass or trying to hold up a mirror that is the size of a billboard by yourself. Its all here for anyone wanting to do a little legwork.

As for the Covid...I'd LOVE to see this current Administration subtract an amount from the debt China thinks they have with us for a biological weapon they released again on the world. It has to be addressed, and to be quite honest with you and anyone reading this...Biden isn't going to do a damned thing. He's already bought and paid for.

Until states like New York, New Jersey, Michigan and California reopen and release the small business engines the unemployment factors are going to remain stuck where it is. I find it amazing that it's recovered to the point it has WITHOUT them! Looking at the Federal Reserve to do anything useful is a fools gold. They want to control through debt and they're starting to understand that they will never get the money they printed back in their coffers. Remember, they are not a government agency and to date have refused a full audit. As far as I'm concerned with regards to them, they can wish with one hand and $hit in the other and see which one fills up first. Our Senators and congressmen have failed this nation by surrendering power to this corrupt enterprise.

Doc, the election is over. Who won? I don't know. This is a referenDUMB on Americans. If you go by either sides actions lots of jail time should be coming. That ain't gonna happen. The true supprise to me is how strong the stupid is.

Nothing that happens between now and then will change a noticeable number of votes. We are planning on bailing from this Fn mess in short order. And yes, that is not hyperbole.

When I see the pure absolute evil both sides perpetrate is sickens me. Anyone here who thinks Trump and the Republicans are the good people is a stupid MF. Anyone here who thinks Biden and the Democrats are the good people is a stupid MF. Guess what, you can't fix stupid.

"Holding America hostage" WTF, I hate dumb slogans like that.

The real question is how much more is either party going to enslave the little people and their descendants to make themselves look like heroes today? Another shot in the arm of a narcotic this time called the "Heroes Act", economic stimulus is nothing more than a euphemism for legalized counterfeiting via the Federal Reserve's digital magic money machine. Are we supposed to cheer on the Keynesian inflationary fiat money regime?
As usual they'll divvy up the loot to the victims of the lockdowns, giving a pittance to the common folk to temporally ease their pain and give the rest to their politically connected cronies to advance assorted nefarious agendas. Of course Pelosi and Co. wants to add insult to injury and bail out the most crooked and bankrupt state and local governments under Democratic control, and give freebies to anyone whose vote can be bought for the Democratic Party.
Of course Fed Chair Jerome Powell stands ready at the keyboard to bring the new multi-trillions of dollars in funny money into existence again in the FED's endless cycle of printing money to prop up the U.S. economy.

Just a ploy to get votes which seems to be backfiring. More proof the trump cares more about winning that he does about Americans and the economy.

In reality, House R's offered a 1.6 Trillion dollar deal and the D's rejected it. D's wanted $2.4T.

Now DJT is telling Congress to send him a standalone bill with another round of $1200 individual stimulus payments in it, and the D's wont. He called their bluff and they are folding like a tablecloth.

If anything is for certain about Trump he regularly blows-up negotiations and walks out as a bargaining/negotiating technique. It's part of the art of the deal.

He's already given wildly mixed-messages on stimulus and unemployment benefits before the election. Seriously, I believe Mnuchin and Pelosi were close. They had planned 90 minutes to meet alone- until Trump pulled the plug. In all seriousness, I do not believe he is even competent right now. For the good of the country, I think Pence needs to take over for a while. YMMV.

The Dems passed a stand alone deal and sent it to the senate where it was rejected. Now the Dems have gone home to run for re-election and the senate is out because of covid. No Deal !

This is not about just assistance for the unemployed and small business. The Dems rejected a Repub proposal for around $1T and help out for their $3T pork.
