As most of you know I drink a lot of cheap whiskey, goal is to try most of the different labels that I can..... I’ve noticed that quite a few have changed the label up and are no longer straight whiskey (ten high, Kentucky Tavern).... they say bourbon whiskey with “natural flavors”. The Kentucky Tavern even says Special Reserve on it now. Did something happen with these brand and others I didn’t hear about?

Right, like I said just recently noticed the change in the label and it doesn’t taste anywhere near the same. Other people I one have noticed the change as well, but no real answer. I’m assuming they are cutting down on aging time and pushing it out the door.

Walker's Ten High was the worst bourbon out there. Many years ago it was aged 4 years and it sucked. Now it's 3 years aged and may be even worse. Walker's Deluxe was my bourbon of choice and I think it was better than much of the crap that showed up since bourbon got popular. Heaven Hill (Quality House) bourbon was my drink of choice when I wasn't in great financial shape. It too was 4 years old back then and charcoal filtered - now it's 3 years old and unfiltered. I usually have a bottle around for mixed drinks.

Evan William's bottled in bond, old overholt bonded rye, rittenhouse bonded rye and old grandad bonded are pretty good for the money imo

The lowest cost stuff in my regular rotation:

I like the Glenmorangie scotch, about $30 bucks.

Elijah Craig is like $25.

Occasionally I'll pick up a bottle of Jack at the grocery store on an impulse buy.

Not sure about much. I asked by booze selling buddy why Jim Beam Black changed from Aged 8 Years to Extra Aged.

Said JB white label is aged 4. JB Black was selling so well they couldn't get it out fast enough so they were bottling it for 7-8 years. Therefore extra aged meaning more than white label, but not the full 8 years.

Was literally just in the local Publix liquor (not know for the bestest prices) and the Old Forrester Rye is 24.99 a bottle, and they and the OF 100 proof signature (which is only 22.99) both have $2 instant coupons. Hard to beat that value right now.

I had been reading good things about the ancient age - never had it though.

I really don't drink very often so when I'm having a glass I usually drink good stuff neat but I do enjoy a bonded old fashioned.

My go to was always the Elijah Craig small batch, especially when they had the age statement on the bottle. I felt like I was stealing it at $22. Now it's $27.99 around here.

I think you first need to clarify what you mean by "Bottom Shelf". Is it a cost thing or a quality thing? It's not always a one-to-one thing. If it's a cost thing then put out a max amount per fifth.

All that being said I think it's hard to beat most of the offerings from Old Forester and Buffalo Trace on bang for your buck. YMMV 🌫
