at one time, he was the most athletic, creative, improvisational and exciting basketball player in the NBA...he was the forerunner to Dr. J...

as a kid growing up in L.A., I tried to mimic his moves but I couldn't jump high enough or contort my body and arms the way he could, so I had to settle for "being" Jerry West...

bad knees cut his career short...

always a gentleman, he quietly pushed back against overt racism of the 50's and early 60's, when black players were subjected to Jim Crow treatment

RIP Mr. Baylor

Definitely one of the great ones. It’s a dang shame that most younguns don’t even know the name.

I loved Elgin.

He begat Dr. J, who begat Jordan, who begat Kobe, who begat Bron...and they had a bunch of cousins like David "Flying Boy" Thompson et al.

But Elgin...my, my, my.

Tom "Satch" Sanders was considered a defensive ace as a starting forward on several of the Russell/Cousy title teams. After a particular playoff game against the Lakers the story was
"Sanders holds Baylor to 61"!!!

I'm sorry, friend. I do not subscribe to your "begat" story. Elgin Baylor was a bad mudda fugga. He didn't "begat" nobody. Dr. J was his own man, who made his own place. Jordan was a man who made his own universe. Kobe deigned to live in the universe Jordan made. Lebron... wasn't fit to carry either's bag... but he did his thing, and I applaud him for it.

Bill Russell... he appreciates their contributions.

pre-Elgin, guys who could hit a one-handed shot after a few passes were revolutionaries.
He was the original create-in-space-and-in-the-air offensive machine. A 6-5 guy who would follow his shot and put it back up two and three times in the middle of trees.
He kinda created creativity in the NBA, and Cousy added the French pastry.

Always tough to compare players from different eras. But I always tell people who watch scratched up b&w tape of a guy like Cousy and say he'd have no chance today to imagine if he was born now with year round training, today's equipment...imagine today's guys in canvass tennis shoes!...add 25 pounds of muscle, special diets, personal trainers...on top of being born with skills and determination in the top 0.1% of the population.

Guys who were in the upper echelon athletically in any era would be in the upper echelon today too if born now with the same genetics.

You are, of course, on point Frank. I don't wholly disagree with you. I'd say that I, in specific Cbid fashion, agree with you 98.2%. Today's players, even with their diet, exercise and sleep schedules.... would get worked, beat to sh*t even, by players of the 60's, 70's and 80's.

Fundamental skills aside, they were used to being bumped, fouled, and taken down in the midst of their shots. Today's players would cry like... well... like a girl playing against biological males that identify as girls winning every game in a girls league. Nome sayin'?

Jordan? C'mon dude. League all his own. Any era.
