Yes! High Inflation Is Back! Short and sweet fundamentals.

05/29/2021Mark Hendrickson
To most people, “inflation” signifies widespread rising prices. Economists have long argued, as a matter of technical accuracy, that “inflation” denotes an increasing money supply. Frankly, though, most people don’t care what happens to the supply of money, but they care a lot about the prices they pay, so I’ll focus primarily on the numerous rapidly rising prices Americans are paying today.

Following are several examples of the current inflation:

Corn, soybeans, and wheat have been trading at multi-year highs, with corn having risen from around $3.80 per bushel in January 2020 to approximately $6.75 now. Chicken wings are at all-time record highs. It is getting more expensive to eat.

Copper prices have risen to an all-time high. Steel, too, recently traded at prices 35% above the previous all-time set in 2008. Perhaps most famously, the price of lumber has nearly quadrupled since the beginning of 2020 and has nearly doubled just since January.

Naturally, with raw materials prices soaring, prices of manufactured goods are jumping, too. That is especially noticeable in the housing market, where the median price of existing homes rose to $329,100 in March—a whopping 17.2% increase from a year earlier.

The cost of driving is soaring, too. According to J.D. Power, cited in The Wall Street Journal, the average used car price has risen 16.7% and new car prices have risen 9.6% since January.

So, are you depressed yet?

Oh yes, making people poorer is always a sign that prosperity is right around the corner.
It's uniquely a Progressive thing.

The enduring faith of the central planners, “The next step is making long-term investments to increase the productivity of our economy, to increase economic growth, and to position the United States to lead the global economy and to take on competitors like China,” Ramamurti said. "There's still quite a ways to go.”

What would we do without da gubment centrally planning the economy, looting the undeserving proles, and "investing" it in good stuff, after all, ultimately only da gubment knows what is the correct use of resources? It's the Chicom way.

And what would you propose Ray?

The concept of money is almost to the point of being dated.

In the world we live in today, there's really no excuse to be poor as there's opportunities everywhere.

Money ain't a thing... it ain't a thing for real... - Young M.A.

Money ain't real, we don't need it no mo?😕

"Money ain't a thing... it ain't a thing for real.?"

You quote some rapper for monetary policy? Had to look it up, I don't follow that chit. Too much unintelligible bad English, N-words and stuff. There's no accounting for taste.

I only quote old dead guys...remember?

"Human cooperation means that everybody tries to contribute to the improvement of human conditions. It is in the market that I give something in order that you give something. Exchange leads to higher standards of living. Voluntary exchanges create civilization.

Inflation and unsound money destroy civilization. Changes in the purchasing power of money affect everybody. They benefit some people and not others. Inflation brings about higher prices. Inflation harms the creditors who are the masses. The richer who own corporate stock have borrowed money and are the debtors who benefit by inflation.

The quantity of money should not be manipulated by government." - Ludwig von Mises (04/03/1969)

Energetic governments don't listen so they always destroy civilizations, they always have. They think they are smart people and can run the economy, counterfeit at will, and tax into prosperity.
Yep, Whistlebritches is right...see "Sleepy Joe and his band of babbling buffoons."

In casinos there's a concept known as chip abstraction. If they can take something you normally have a hard time letting go of and turn it into something a little more fluid.... well, you should know what happens at that point.

The flaw in a society in which rarity is a thing of the past is not a monetary policy... it's the concept of money itself. At some point it's going to need to be redefined.

You're holding on to relics... your ideas of fundamental truths themselves are relics. I'm guessing you are able to use your rhetoric to control weaker minded people... those holding on looking for answers.... those holding on to some hidden meaning to their existence. I'm guessing it's been harder these days.

It angers you that the fundamental truths you hold so dear are neither fundamental nor universally true... forcing your mind into a circular chaotic mess... because you refuse to see the evidence in front of you... your world view is wrong... though it doesn't mean it always was.

Systems are dynamic and evolve. When systems stop evolving, systems die. Our system has moved on... you however, have not.

You hate progressives... thus progress (you hate progress... yes, we've established that, please don't embarass yourself yet again by claiming the contrary). You want our system to be static, and not evolve. You think such a system is sustainable... it is not.

I look forward to your incessant rhetoric of attacking liberals and progress. You should give hip hop a shot, maybe you'll learn a little bit about humanity that isn't defined by your extreme narrow view of the world.

Systems cease to have meaning when they can no longer facilitate the increase of entropy.

There, a fundamental truth.

Yeah, getting all sciencey and stuff. Might want to brush up on your thermodynamics though.

Come on bucky... you should know by now I don't phrase things like the text books.

Think about the way I phrased it relative to the way the conversation was flowing...

The way I stated it is perfectly valid... too lazy to find a specific link... but look up heat death.

Oh yeah... I'll pick that one up along with your pre-algebra book.

How far you go again?

I remember you discounting "i" as something that shouldn't be taken seriously because it is imaginary.

Unfortunately the only one on the board who I know of who can be a viable third party is Brewha...

Ax = b...

Ax = bx also has specific meaning for those big words that start with eigen...

You already lost credence with me. You can't school me.

Oh... you need "i" and those big eigen words to do quantum mechanics... it's kind of necessary. Those familiar with the subject know that's true...

When I start worrying about quantum mechanics, I'll be sure to contact you. My exposure to high energy physics was limited to coffee discussions with the PhD theorists and how it could relate to what I was trying to to at the time. Being a material's engineer guy and not a physicist, my eyes just glazed over.

In the meantime, look into Cooper pairs and how they relate to superconductivity - it's kinda quantum mechanicy.

Then brush up on flux pinning centers with respect to alpha-Ti precipitates in low temperature Nb-Ti alloys. Ya gotta pin those fluxes in order to keep the superconductor superconducting.

Niobium-Tin (Nb-Sn) was not as much fun to work with as Niobium-Ti (Nb-Ti) but the jelly roll method of making Nb-Sn superconductors is kinda cool. The the Kirkendall effect during diffusion heat treatments leads to problems but not big enough hamper them from commercially viability. If you go for an MRI, the magnet that they put you in is a Niobium-Tin (Nb-Sn) superconducting magnet. Particle accelerators magnets like at FERMI or CERN are Nb-Ti and Nb-Sn. The Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) that they started to build in Waxahachie, Texas in the 80's (?) was going to use Nb-Ti. There's probably still a huge vacant and abandoned tunnel down there.

For fun, read up on the Meissner Effect and levitating trains.

Then there's the whole high temperature superconductors arena that threw high energy physics dudes on their ear. Based on the running theory at the time (mid 80's?) on how superconductors work, these ceramic superconductors don't fit the model and shouldn't work.

Lucy! we need anuder teary to esplain these things.

The current state of the art of high temp superconductors are copper oxides. Bismuth strontium calcium copper oxide (BSCCO) to be exact, affectionately known and pronounced as "Bisco." Bi-2223 was the prom queen back in the 90's but it turned out to be a solution looking for a problem.

With all that, not once did I ever run into imaginary numbers in real world applications though. Maybe I didn't look hard enough.

That's odd. Is your last name Cooper? Mine ain't so we can't be Cooper pairs. Maybe we can fake it.

Two electrons traveling together... one follows in the wake of the other, bound by some imaginary force so one can travel with near zero resistance. Will you be my ebony to my ivory, living in perfect harmony?
