Maybe it’s explained in the doc but it’s amazing that for all the success he had, when he retired, he said he was done with coaching and stuck to that statement. At some point you would have thought some team would have offered him a boatload of $$$ to comeback (…and maybe someone did…) but he stuck to his guns.

Was just a kid when he coached, but loved him and Pat Summerall in the booth. I damn sure played his Madden NFL game for many years on playstation, sega, etc...

Rest easy, coach.

I read in an obit of sorts, that noted he has the best won/loss record of any NFL coach in history with at least 100 wins.
He was a YOUNG head coach, and got out of the coaching gig at age 42.
Al Davis was smart to recognize Madden’s talent. The football world freaked out when Davis hired a 32 y/o head coach.
Football was a different game back then...

So, long before he stopped flying, I saw Madden leaving the 1971 or 1972 Hula Bowl at the old Honolulu Stadium. The game was over and as we headed towards the Diamond Head King St. exit, John was literally running out of the stadium. My friends and I were a bit shocked to see him, certainly didn't expect someone like him would be there but we were too far behind and he was going too fast for us to ask for an autograph.
