Have been working out hard for the last month after taking years off. Was finally feeling good and feeling strong again and am pretty sure I at least partially tore my pec benching today. Seeing ortho tomorrow.

Any of you guys been through this?

I remember workouts, and am grateful for this reminder that they are hazardous to your health

I have, but I tore my bicep at the same time, so I didn't notice the pec until it was too late. Now I have a divet in my chest where the bicep tendon used to attach or attach more fully.

Sounds like you're going to the doc. Do so asap. My understanding is that if they don't re-attach the muscle within a week or so, then it's too late forever.

Mine doesn't hurt anymore, but it did significantly reduce my chest strength and flexibility. I used to do pushups as a warm up. Now the pushups are the workout.

So sorry you hurt yourself. Definitely get it checked out.

I'm mostly just pissed because I don't want to be layed up and was enjoying the gym.

I know sometimes football players tear their pecs and it's generally a season-ending injury. I imagine the rehab must take months before you're back or close to normal. But, that's the same for any bone or muscle injury. The rehab is the hardest and longest part.

Good luck with your doctor's visit and diagnosis.

Maybe it's a tumor

I did, in the mid 80s, doing heavy dumbbell inclines.
Only a relatively minor tear, and I was in really good shape back then, having 10+ years of steady weight training under my belt at the time.
I wasn’t right for several months.
Don’t know how old you are, but if you’re past middle age, and it’s a serious tear?
You’re looking at 6+ months of rehab, strengthening, stretching, e- stim, and maybe even surgery.

If it’s a minor tear, like I’m guessing it is, you’ll have to take several weeks off, maybe more, of doing any chest work, only doing light rehab and stretching, etc.
Then you’ll progress to simply light bench “support” lifts, where you are simply holding a relatively light weight.......no lowering or pressing.
Then on to narrow grip, light benching with a short stroke, and so on. Get with someone who can set you up with a rehab plan.

That's basically my plan. I'm 40. Guess I was due.

Well you’re not the first. Depends on where the tear is, and how much tendon is involved, as far as how long you’re gonna be laid up.
But what you did happens regularly.
Person works out for a long time, then stops for an extended period of time.

Once you start working out again, your muscles will respond relatively quickly.
Unfortunately, your tendons (and ligaments for that matter) take quite a bit longer to return to their former tension load ability (much less blood flow and cell turnover.)
So for a while, you are in danger of having a muscle that can create more torque than the tendon can take if you’re pushing it.

Same thing happens to steroid users. When taking traditional steroids, Dianabol, Winstrol, et al, the muscle responds MUCH faster than tendons, and the roid boy blows up his bicep tendon doing dead lifts, or tears a pec benching, etc.
Doesn’t happen as much with HGH, but I digress.................get it checked out.........and make sure you rehab it properly, and back off your intensity for a bit.......you’re not 25 anymore.

What happened with your pec? You can't just leave us hanging. Are you going to make it? Need a Will?

Just got an MRI this morning and got the results about an hour ago. Thankfully the tendon is mostly intact as is the musculotendinous junction. Somehow the pec itself tore/ruptured. There's a pretty good amount of blood and edema but it is all within the muscle belly so I really don't have much bruising. It's really the best possible scenario because I didn't want to have surgery, mostly due to the downtime. This way I can rehab it. But the ortho (also my best friend) doesn't want me to abduct my shoulder more than 90 degrees or externally rotate at all for 2 weeks in fear it will get worse.

When I felt that tear it was the weirdest feeling and I knew instantly. It literally felt and sounded exactly how you would think a muscle tearing strand by strand would feel.

Thanks for asking guys.
