Back in college, I encountered the drunk leaning/walking thing late after bar close on many weekends. See, what you don't understand is there's a large gravitational pull from an invisible object that follows you on the way home. I figured this out via empirical testing and it came clear to me one night while walking down Chandler St. from a party (I remember it well so it wasn't a total blackout).
Drunk leaner obviously has his large gravity orb on his left side while phone walker clearly has his orb following behind him.
The key is, when walking on the sidewalk, to stay close to the grass on the side where this mysterious force is pulling you . Then when it finally wins, you take a header into the grass or a soft snowbank and not on the cement.
