SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Police Department has become the latest victims of rampant catalytic-converter theft in the Bay Area.

Mission Local reported Tuesday that a total of four department vehicles were hit this week near the department's Special Operations Bureau at 17th and De Haro streets in the Potrero Hill neighborhood.

SFPD said the thefts were discovered Monday afternoon and likely happened either Sunday night or in the early morning hours Monday.

Thefts of catalytic converters have hit record highs in the Bay Area over the past two years, according to insurance industry data. Under cover of the night, thieves slide under cars armed with a flashlight and a battery-powered saw, cutting the prized converters off before dashing away.

I hope they use "safety GLASSES"...

We don't want their eyes "to splode" FROM FLYING IRON SPECS AND DUST the next time they get their FREE MRI ON MEDICAID...

San Francisco, where else could you rob $949.99 from a drug store, steal a catalytic converter and take a dump out on the street in front of people enjoying their dinner at a sidewalk cafe and nobody blinks?

My old work site had the catalytic converters stolen from SIX trucks in one night. No sh*t. I had to give it to those meth heads. They were organized.

All joking aside, nothing will be done about this unless scrappers start getting held accountable for buying stolen CCs...and that ain't about to happen any time soon. Not in the People's Republic of California.

Here in MA I don't think scrap yards accept catalytic converters without jumping through some hoops or knowing someone at the scrap yard. I had to replace the exhaust system on a previous car - Ford Focus commuter car. The Focus has 2 CC's, one integrated in the exhaust manifold and another near the muffler. When I had the whole exhaust system replaced I told them I wanted the old catalytic converters back so I could sell them to the junk yard and reclaim some expenses.

When I called the junk yard they said they don't buy stand alone CC's (probably due to people stealing them and the didn't want to be part of that). It had to be attached to the car or you needed some proof that you owned the car that it came off of with my name, address, copy of my ID, vehicle VIN number and stuff. Too much of a hassle for $100 or so.

I don't remember what I did with it. Probably let a scrap collector take it way along with some old steel rims and and old clothes dryer I had in the basement.

Maybe I should have called Jonsie and we could have split the profits.
