Went to my local B&M today. They have an amazing selection and are one of the bigger shops in the NY area.
Picked up a Tatuaje Cabiguan and Tuxtla and a Perdomo Habano.
3 sticks for $43. I love to support the locals but it’s tough to justify prices that are so much higher than mail order, even with shipping.

I’m going to keep on going, since I like the whole process of wandering around but man, it’s tough.

I agree. The markup is pretty high.

I usually only go to the B&M shops when it’s too cold or too hot to smoke outside and I want to use their lounge area. I’m willing to drop 15 bucks on a good stick to smoke it in a nice temp and a comfy chair.

I’m with you on that. It’s raining here and I’m bored so wanted to smoke. Their lounge was closed but I bought cigars anyway

I sometimes splurge on higher end stuff at a B&M. Shopping online isn't going to save that much money on Padróns, Ashtons, etc, anyway, so might as well buy them at the local shpo and help them out.

The few opportunities I get to go to a shpo, I always buy a couple higher end cigars as well.
Mid-range smokes are MUCH cheaper at auction or online sales.

Don’t overlook state taxes….NY.

Business of any kind isn’t cheap, they’re getting hit with inflation, taxes and card fees. And hiring….you tried hiring in the last couple years?

When I first started smoking premium cigars, I used to buy from 4 local B&Ms but as my horizons broadened, I realized I couldn’t be paying $9 for an AFH SSM when I could be getting them for $5 on CBid. Ultimately slowed my singles purchases from the locals and transitioned to almost exclusive online vendors.

What’s tough is the breaking away of relationships you build when going into a store, talking story and getting honest thoughts about new cigars.

^ that’s the thing. Frankly, as someone who works from home and doesn’t get out much the trip to the B&M is a treat. But the cost is nuts. This ain’t exactly a cheap hobby but it’s tough to justify a 15% to 20% difference between B&M and online just because I’m starved for human interaction.

Not sure what you 'NY area" is,but if its NYC area, it's well worth the ride to PA. much, much cheaper. I'm in NJ where and its high here too, but a 20min drive over the bridge into the Philly burbs and prices will drop a good deal.

JGRAZ I’m on Long Island but my daughter went to school in PA and I definitely agree the prices are much better.
She’s graduated but probably still worth a road trip

Tobacco taxes have essentially closed down most of the cigar shops around me. There is one liquor store in town that sells some stuff but they are about $10 or $15 for basic General Cigar stuff and I wouldn't buy them from anyway (storage is a glass display "humidor" thingy).

Closest real cigar shops in my area would require at least an hour drive into New Hampshire or the Boston area burbs. But the prices are crazy. Anything I buy is from online suppliers.

My local SHPO ....DOES NOT PROTECT ME....

IT IS FILLED WITH LOCAL township cops...the older ones...the ones who helped the FBI-SSG from 2012-2016...

I'd love to go in there when they are all half drunk and confront them verbally....they'd either take the bait and really argue with me .....or....
and I guess this one most...
they'd CLAM UP AND REMEMBER THE lifelong NON DISCLOSURE agreements they all signed about ten yrs ago and are still scared ****less of those sick ass FBI-SSG MUDERERS and they'd think back about all the **** they saw me go through and get totally scared and not say a peep...even when baited and called to the mat......

as does the cigar tax rate in California...it is 56.32%, so a $10 cigar will cost about $16.50 when you add the state sales tax and the county sales tax to the total...

it is hard to protect a shpo here in the golden state, but occasionally you'll find a shpo who will "forget" to calculate the various taxes at checkout, but charge "only" the sticker price, which is usually close tp MSRP...

other shpo's will inflate the sticker price to include the taxes, but pretend like they're not collecting the tax...

that's why I spend about 99% of my cigar money on-line.
