Z generously loaded me up with a hit from the TAG thread and included some pipe tobacco. I need a pipe though. I think I have an old drug store pipe around somewhere if I can find it, but I want something decent. I see people talking about all these different types, and I don't know anything about them.

What's a good starter pipe?

I knew palama should have grabbed a cob for you….

MM cob. Low maintenance and no break in like briar.

A cob is a good starter and one with a filter should be good. Some briars are broken in to some extent. Don't spend much in the event you decide the pipe is not your thing.

Cob.
Then, if you like pipe baccy and the pipe experience…….get a few more cobs.
They smoke cool, easy to maintain, particularly once you get 4 or 5 and you have a good rotation going, and one or two dedicated to aromatics (If you like those) etc.
And, if you lose or break one, it’s not a big financial hit.

Mm cob. I have a couple respectable briars but I usually smoke the cob. Probably have a dozen. They’re cheap smoke good and if you drop it outside goofing around you’re not out much. Pipe good. Try him. Just a learning curve

Like others have said, a $10 Missouri meerschaum corn cob is a perfect starter pipe. Personally, I like the "legend" because it has a decent size bowl, a straight tip, and the outer bowl is smoothed down so it doesn't feel like a dried corncob.

I like the bent ones I have ordered different stems for them. Stem feels like I’m talking different kinds of pipes here
