Had a molar extracted Friday afternoon...one of the most painful dental experiences I've suffered...surgeon had to scrape the infected bone matter from the socket, in order to put in a bone graft to fill the opening, and he was not the least bit gentle...I guess he thought the five shots of lidocaine were sufficient...two minutes of scraping and I was almost out of the chair, having arched my back during the procedure...

no cigars until Tuesday, at the earliest, and some dental sites say I should abstain for a week...I think 3 days should be sufficient due to the bone graft filling the socket...

For all you dental “experts” out there, how many days should Delta hold off from smoking cigars after his molar extraction?

Vote and ‘splain your recommendation.

I’d say 7 to be safe. Would hate for there to be dental complications and need to go back in.

Also, I always feel like cigars taste way better after a hiatus.

Smoke twice as much as soon as possible. Tar should pack into any of the crevasses and you'll be all good

Well according to posts by the Arbiter I’ve learned that experts have to have a degree or a legal document.

So I’ll defer to a week, don’t want anything happening to my Uncle Al.

I know that dental infections are bad news for anyone who may have any form of heart disease in any stage.

If over the remaining years you have on this planet, you are required to have any more extractions, the non-smoking time will add up. i say just go back and have all your teeth pulled. That way the waiting will ultimately be reduced to just this one time.

Economy of scale. Sound advice.

I'd give it at least a week, maybe more. That bone graph stuff can come out. The suction action of smoking makes that worse. I had mine come out a year and a half ago. Almost was unable to get the needed implant because of it. Sorry.

Oh, should've added, I don't think I took any break from smoking. That was a mistake

Minimum of 7, but I would suggest 9 or 10 if everything goes well.

At least 3-5 days……….AFTER the gum has totally healed, no hole, no flap, no nuthin.
Not worth it.

As long as possible.

Not just the suction but the local action of nicotine on the mucous membranes of your mouth cause constriction of the tiny lil blood vessels that are necessary to heal.

I did 4 days after an extraction a couple years ago. My dentist recommended never again of course. But finally said 3-5.
Many moon's ago when I had my wisdom teeth out I went back to smoking cigarettes after 2 days. Developed dry socket.

Thank you, gentlemen...seems the enlightened consensus is 7 days, so I will wait until Friday to resume my cigar habit. I've gotten used to a short hiatus from smoking, having recently had a sinus/lung infection that kept me off cigars for almost a week. And they do seem tastier after the break.

Tiver's total teeth removal suggestion sounded radical, but may become more realistic as I get older...NOT!

The gum where my last extraction was has been giving me some annoyance lately - go as long as you can without a smoke.

See Dan’s post. I’m thinking more like 2-4 weeks. You’d really hate a dry socket. Think you hurt when it was extracted. That’s not even close to the pain of a dry socket. Not only is it painful but it persists for days and maybe a week or more.

Your dentist will be greatly relieved to know you’re getting advice from a cigar forum.

Wife had one 20 or so years ago and I have never seen her so miserable.
Just a wisdom tooth extraction that went sideways……….it was not pretty.
