I like putting in a pad to protect me against bidders flowing in at the last minute and sniping. The pad is the difference between my bid and the maximum I would be willing to pay. Maybe you could call it a Maxi Pad.

Setting a max bid is the fairest way. It beats sniping in the last 5 seconds. Just place your bid and leave it.
