I did a science experiment. Rigorous, peer reviewed (you are reading this aren’t you?), and all that.
My hypothesis was that, at least for the non-maduro cigars, My Father only has one blend. They just roll it in different sizes, put different wrappers and bands on it, sell it. I like their cigars. I’m not saying they’re bad, I like them, but for the life of me they all seem the same. They all have the same standard Nicaraguan profile ("SNP").

(Full disclosure, I have the palate of a goat. Subtlety is not my thing.)

So, I ordered a sampler of toros with one torpedo in an effort to control for differences caused by size variations and, hopefully to some extent, age. I added a lancero last night, so that made a full week of MF cigars.

1st Night – La Antiguedad. Good cigar. Linear, but I liked it better than I thought I would. SNP.

2nd Night – Le Bijou. This was a torpedo, but I would call it a belicoso because the sides are parallel. It’s about the same size as a toro. Better than the La Antiguedad, but not dramatically so. If the Antiguedad scores a 6 out of 10, then this was a 7 out of 10.

3rd Night – Jaime Garcia. OK, this was obviously different. It’s Connecticut broadleaf. I smoked it to provide some variety, and wish I had saved it a couple more nights. These are my favorite MF cigars.

4th Night – DPG Blue. Same basic profile as the Antiguedad and LB, but richer IMO. I liked this cigar better than both of the first two naturals.

5th Night – Serie JJ. This was the surprise of the batch. This cigar tasted the most different to me and was my favorite natural, followed closely by the DPG Blue.

6th Night – El Centurion. Good cigar. SNP and not much different that I can tell. I was surprised when I read the blend information that these have a criollo 98 wrapper. I would never have guessed that. It didn't have the creaminess I associate with criollo. Must have been drowned out by the SNP!

7th Night – La Promesa lancero. Good cigar. Same profile. Being a lancero introduced an added variable, but those don’t matter so much in science.

I was going to smoke a DPG Black (Cuban Classic) romusto tonight, but I can’t. I mostly feel like I am smoking the same cigar every night. I need some MSA.
So, there you have it. Scientific proof that My Father uses the same blend in (almost) all its cigars. (I think they use it in a fair number of Tatuajes too.)

I Have Spoken.

I wasn’t with you up front but after reading your reviews I agree with you after all. Also, put a Fausto and a Nuevitas in your Tat rotation. I bet that will mix it up for ya the Tat line.
Interesting observations 👍🏻

Op

You didn't include My Father original in your experiment?:-k

That's ok I call the Promesa the "My Father Light"

Seriously, I think they put more tobacco and better rollers on the My Father Original. Prolly age it a bit more too.

I mainly smoke My Father, My Father Lights and DPG Blue. I've tried several others though, and despite your extensive scientific research I still want to give the Flor De Las Antillas Maduro a try--for science.

Guess I'll agree with you about the bulk of the MF line. I like most of them but they always seem to just completely blow out my palate for a a day or 2, so I tend to shy away. Jamie Garcia & DPG lines not so much. JG is probably my favorite of the bunch, and cheapest as well so that's a plus. The DPG line seems to have quite a bit of variation between them though, with Vegas as my favorite.

Pepin blue (original) is my favorite cigar out of them all. I do find a lot of the my father lines to be similar enough. La duena I find different than the others and I do like it. I’ll smoke any of them any time but I like Ol blue the best

I used to enjoy the CC Black label in robusto and I LOVED the blue in corona gorda.

Now? Don’t care for any of them, don’t hate them, just don’t care for them.

Strangely I think Tatuajes have maintained their quality more.

When did the quality of DPG/My Father decline in your opinion?

I've been smoking Garcia's blends since around 2016 and I can't tell a difference in quality.

I picked up a box of DPG Blue corona gorda last fall. I like the torpedo & toro as well.

I never have gotten into Tatuaje cigars. Been smoking since 2013 and I still can't figure out what's what in all of those lines. I don't think there could possibly be a more confusing lineup. I liked the Miami. The rest of em is "Reserva" this "Balls" that and then some random year.

Anybody know which is da good one, med/full to full, Ecuadorian Habano?

Robert have you tried the red band? Havana vi. I keep a box of those. I prefer the thicker version like romusto toro sizes. To further confuse things…. They have a Havana vi verocu. I prefer the original If you’ve not tried it I would recommend it. I need to smoke one soon. I also really like the pepin blue so I think you’d enjoy the regular original red band tatuaje. Price is also right on those

I've had the Havana VI, couple of robustos. I don't remember them being quite strong enough for me, but at the time I was trying to smoke the strongest cigars possible just to see what my limit was... I liked the flavor though. Prolly should revisit that one. Never tried the Verocu.

I've also smoked 2 or 3 of the Fausto as well. Strength is definitely there, but I thought the flavor was just ok.

^ try the cojonu 2012. I believe they have 3 wrapper varieties on those. My favorite is the Sumatra. One of my very top cigars all time. Believe the original is habano wrapped

Okay thanks Jake. I put that on my purchase list. I tend to go a long time in between cigar purchases but the 2012 will be one of the first things...

I don't have much experience with Sumatra, but I do like the V Melanio. For me, Ecuadorian habano is hard to pass up.

Hi Robert, I thought I’d mention that Punch Diablo is an Ecuadorian Sumatra Oscuro. It’s very interesting. Creamy and twangy and umami-sweetness. They can be found on sale quite often. Might not be on the same level as some of these boutiques but the price is right.

Reserva denotes Connecticut Broadleaf maduro wrapper, FYI in the Cojonu line the black and gold is maduro….white and gold is Sumatra and there are also the normal Habano wrappers too. Many of the Miami line are available AS Reserva. Not really that confusing.

Try a Noella, the Cojonú 2012 is really excellent (I prefer the maduro and Sumatra but the normal wrapper is good too) and a Petite Cazadores Reserva is really mandatory.

Sounds like we have a new target though.

*edit* sorry I forgot the DPG part. I can’t date it specifically but I’d say 2012-2014 sometime? Then he started doing the crazy anniversary release stuff and that was also a let down. Oddly enough I got a box of LAdC Mi Amore having NO IDEA that they were SA wrappers which I don’t like usually. I liked these so much that I got some more. Now they have a blue/gold band and the wrappers don’t look ANYTHING like the old ones. Then Joel (Opie) recommended the MF Oferta or La Promisa can’t remember which in lancero, but I did enjoy both those blends. Another one that was a let down was The Judge. But in my first post it was mainly the classic lines I was referring to.

Seems confusing to me, compared to most cigar makers lineups. He could streamline that a little. Lol

And I have no idea what your last sentence means.

He reblended the La Aroma De Cuba Reserva; I like it better than the regular La Aroma De Cuba Mi Amor now. It's stronger than it used to be but not over the top. It's a good msa wrapped cigar.

I was mainly wondering if you've noticed a decline in DPG Blue and My Father Original. I can't really tell a difference in those-that's mainly what I smoke.

I do like the Promesa and Opulencia though, but they're newer additions. The Opulencia is a good msa smoke as well.
