I have an old humidor from a deceased relative that I put into action over the weekend. (Need I say why??)It has a cherry wood exterior and a white metal or plastic interior. The only wood in the inside is the frame for the seal. The humidifying element is an 1" x 10" (approx.) crusty metal piece that has that solid white "chalky" material and is held in the lower front by metal clips.
I am using this while I am airing out my new Savinelli humi that has an "odd" smell. (see other thread "Savinelli Humi")

Is anyone familiar with this type of humi? Is it any good? Haven't used it long enough to see if it holds hum. OK yet.

Any input will be appreciated.

I have had several of those 'dors. I like to refinish and modernize them. Seems like you have a clay humidifier. I think these were used in the 60s and before. The interior description makes me think 60s too. Earlier ones had glass lining. If the wood is good, they can clean up nicely. Typically though, the cedar is very musty smelling. I would think this might communicate to the humidifying element. I would be concerned that 'dor would make your smokes smell and taste bad. What's a little cedar taste compared to mold?

xrun, The glass interior you're talking about, could it be white? I will have to look again later, it may be glass. Didn't really notice that closely.

White glass like a coffee mug? That's milk glass. You have just moved into an earlier era. 40's 50's? Hard to say without seeing it. Check the odor on that humidifier!

My grandfather had one of those types of hunidors! It was about the size of a shoebox!!!

At work now.. don't have humi w/ me but from memory, it is about the size of a shoe box. Green felt covering entire bottom. Long piano hinge accross back. Humidifier in in place by two 3/4" (approx) piece of thin metal that are on a nail that allows it to swing so hum. can be removed. Exterior is a little beat up. Has a metal plate inset into the middle of the top (no monograms)and has a round key hole in the front. I have the broken key and the round "stem" looks to have a square inside to turn locking mech.
That's all I can remember now.

Low, at least get one of the small Paradigm humidifiers and mount it inside the lid. It will be a lot more reliable than the clay artifact in there now.
