Recently, I was diagnosed with A.A.A.D.D.
- Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.

This is how it manifests:

I decided to wash my car.

As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the hall table. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.

I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the trash can under the table, and notice that the trash can is full.

So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the trash first.

But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the trash anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

I take my checkbook off the table, and see that there is only one check left.

My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go to my desk where I find the bottle of soda that I had been drinking.

I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the soda aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over.

I see that the soda is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.

As I head toward the kitchen with the soda, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need to be watered.

I set the soda down on the counter, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.

I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.

I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table.

I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, we will be looking for the remote, but nobody will remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers. I splash some water on the flowers, but most of it spills on the floor.

So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.

Then I head down the hall trying to remember what I was
planning to do.

At the end of the day: the car isn't washed, the bills aren't paid, there is a warm bottle of soda sitting on the counter, the flowers aren't watered, there is still only one check in my checkbook, I can't find the remote, I can't find my glasses, and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.

Then when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired.

I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mails.

Hope you will never be afflicted with this insidious disorder!

I thought men were the only victims of this. Or is it that our wives and significant others make us think so.

Funny, I had an armload of laundry to take to the washer. I set it down next to the garage door (next to the computer desk)to turn off the AOL screen I left on when I got up to answer the phone 10 minutes ago. I saw that I had new email and stopped to look at it.

When I closed the screen I saw that this site was still up, so I stopped to look at a couple posts.

Then I saw that my kid left a cup on the desk, so I took it to the sink. I filled the sink with water to do the dishes and walked back to get the laundry.

Well..saw an IM on the computer and stopped to answer it. Went to close the site and saw this post. I looked at it thinking Echick had some rare tropical disorder she was going to share with us.

Guess what...there is a pile of laundry sitting next to the garage door still.

You are not alone E.

Oh Marla I am so so sorry to hear about your affliction. If there is anything I can do you know the way to San Jose? I remember the other day, no wait it was last year the time I worked in the garden and while doing so the phone after I had a beer that evening was good with a on the chair over by the fire place. I lauged so hard I got a D in that class, but the teacher was hot so I ate a taco for lunch yesterday. All that being said take care of your drugs and Mike will be a happy camper because only you can prevent forrest fires.

Marla, sorry to hear of your struggle with AAADD. I can sympathize since I suffer from a related syndrome known as IMBFS, or Increasingly Manifest Brain Fart Syndrome. Symptoms are reminiscent of AAADD, but also include a pronounced lack of mental focus (especially at work), thoughts and sentences started but rarely completed, constant pauses in speech in attempts to remember common words such as your child's name, and several layers of post-it notes canvassing the computer monitor, kitchen counter and car dashboard. I am told the condition is irreversible, especially at my advancing age of 42, although awareness and anxiety over the syndrome can be controlled effectively with daily ministrations of ethanol. Alas, growing old brings such difficulties!

My favorite one is to forget my phone number.

Yes X it would be easy to confuse me if you have the "force" with you.

My wife gets pi$$ed when we go to her work events and I forget names of people I met at the last function (or even 5 minutes ago). She now takes me to a corner and points out people and has me recite their name three times. It works.

Heh, good one eleltea. Here's a PSA:

I noticed last summer that I was starting to get really forgetful, and had more and more trouble concentrating. I took a big step, I cut out "aspertame/nutrisweet". I'd seen reports before about how it turns to a substance resembling formaldehyde in your brain... I always laughed it off. But I figured, "it couldn't hurt to give it a try". So I went on the nutrisweet wagon. I had previously been ADICTED to diet DP and diet Coke, etc... Drinking as many as 6 or more a day. When I cut nutrisweet cold turkey, it was "amazing..." it was quite literally as if someone had walked in to a dark room and flipped on a light switch!! I occasionally have a diet drink now a daze (very occasionally). Instead, I have tea, or coffee, usually tea.

I'm not preachin like your mama, but if you're noticing that your mental acuity isn't what it was, you might want to consider giving this a try. Also, you should take a multi vitamin every day.

Don't laugh! Seriously, if you're looking for more brain power and you've noticed it slipping, try kicking the diet "anything" bucket and substitute Tea.

Also, I used to have 2-3 drinks a day. I cut back to one day a week (usually 🙂 That seems to help too.

Excellent, then you don't count! I was wondering if anyone who consumes Aspartame daily and is noticing a bit of a hitch in their giddy up would consider taking a vacation from it for 3 or 4 days. I had a medium DC today with lunch, again, as I said, I didn't give it up completely, I may have 1 or 2 a week. My problem was I was doing 3-5 a day... I think it affected me.

it's probably not what you called it, but simply as you get older, most of the things you had to do or remember to do, aren't all that important any more.

drop something on the floor? wait until there are several things before you bend down to pick up.

car dirty? so what, i have clean underwear on.

food got cold? now it's a picnic.

tape a movie and miss the last 5 minutes? it's only a story.

RESIGNATION

I am hearby tendering my resignation as an adult. I have decided I would like to accept the responsibilities of an 8 year old again. I want to go to McDonald's and think that it's a four star restaurant. I want to sail sticks across a fresh mud puddle and make a sidewalk with rocks. I want to think M&Ms are better than money because you can eat them. I want to lie under a big oak tree and run a lemonade stand with my friends on a hot summer's day. I want to return to a time when life was simple. When all you knew were colors, multiplication tables, and nursery rhymes, but that didn't bother you, because you didn't know that you didn't know and you didn't care. All you knew was to be happy because you were blissfully unaware of all the things that should make you worried of upset.

I want to think the world is fair. That everyone is honest and good. I want to believe that anything is possible. I want to be oblivious to the complexities of life and be overly excited by the little things again.

I want to live simple again. I don't want my day to consist of computer crashes, montains of paperwork, depressng news, how to survive more days in the month than there is money in the bank doctor bills, gossip, illness, and loss of loved ones.

I want to believe in the power of smiles, hugs, a kind word, truth, justice, peace, dreams, the imagination, mankind, and making angels in the snow.

So, here's my checkbook and my car keys, my credit card bills and my
bank statements. I am officially resigning from adulthood.

And if you wan't to discuss the further, you'll have to catch me first, cause....
"Tag! You're it."
