100% this. Cesar Milan's book (he's got a bunch) titled Cesar's Way was the most helpful book of all the books I read. Little things we do as dog owners make a huge difference in the way our dogs view us.
He states that many issues dog owners face today with their dog's behavior is their own fault. Dogs are pack animals and they need structure and leadership. If you do not provide it, they will assume the lead role. It's in their nature.
Tank is 80% obedient. If I wanted to be a total screw, he would be 100%, but I allow him to be a dog and I give him some freedom to be himself. This way, I get a dog who listens... and a dog who will play with no reservations and be a complete goofball because he knows if he acts like a retard, pops will allow it... to a point.
He is not as obedient with my wife, though he does listen to her, begrudgingly. I forgot something when we left the house this morning for our walk. We were about a block away, so I turned over the leash and ran back to the house. Tank continued the walk with my wife, but she said he kept turning back for me, and at another block away just sat and refused to move until I got back.
I'm sure many of you are tired of hearing me go on and on about the dog and the relationship we've developed. I completely understand that. I've always loved dogs, and they've always tolerated me. When I was finally able to devote my time to a dog of my own... I geeked out.
I geeked out hard. But I think that because I have devoted so much time reading and learning about the relationship we have with dogs, Tank is better off. And so am I.
