Rearing the OP; Science has always been viewed as an opposition to the comfortable beliefs that people have. Copernucus differed with churches beliefs about the Earth being the center of the universe and was exiled as a heretic.
Friedrich Nietzsche taught us that if there were no god, it would be necessary to create him. Ernest Becker greatly expanded on this to its conclusion – yet it is not common or desirable knowledge for most.
It is a peculiarity of us, that when we are presented with the terms of our existence we look at it the way a cow looks at an oncoming train.
