What Cigar Has Been A Huge Let Down?

Thread turned highly educational and now I'm left a little paranoid. I have bought lots of cigars off CI and wonder how many were originals and how many are bogus. Frankly, if I knew that CI bought the rights to produce their own, under the licensed brand, I would have never purchased them, no matter what kind of deal I was getting. I want to avoid this kind of buy at all cost. I just purchased 3 fivers of Padilla Dominus Robustos off here and now I want to know if they're the real deal or not. Anyone with an answer?

^I think you misunderstood. CI sometimes buys retired labels and reintroduces them as the originals. They also have exclusive lines made just for them (as do other cigar retailers). As far as we know, they do not make, or have made, their own version of general release current production sticks like the Dominus. If a "Padilla" stick shows up here that isn't available anywhere else, or hasn't been around for a while, then you should show caution. Also, if a size shows up here that you can't get anywhere else, you may want to give it a try before buying a box. No one is saying that CI "counterfeits" cigars in any way.

that dpnewell still buys cigars from here speaks volumes...In dpnewell we trust. Brendan, you should've been around here when he advised us about the LPH Morados...what a frenzy, and justifiably so.

Lets take the Graycliff 1966 I ordered a five pack it came all warped in celleo but there was a piece of paper in the pack made in Honduras but the bands still say made in Bahamas??? I contacted Graycliff via twitter and they had told me CI bought the rights to the Cigar band and made it themselves. Slightly False advertising Hand made in the Bahamas band but really made in Honduras??? Gurkha Beauty this is a direct quote form them via Gurkha web site "Only 500 boxes in the world. The wrapper is the best of the best, a 7 year old CT Ecuadorian. While the Beast is more full body, the Beauty is a medium at best. hence, The Beauty and the Beast. Beauty is in a box of 25 upright smoked glass tubes. " Now if this is true how do you have these all the time if only 500 boxes were made and can sell a 10 pack for $49 when originally it came in a glass tube and cost $30 for one. It is not the same cigar.

This is what I mean...this seems pretty shady.

So what word do you put on it when a company buys the rights to a cigar label, LPH, Ghurka Beauty etc. advertises it as the same cigar with the same ratings, shows a picture of it as it was originally produced, same box, same glass tube, says it is a thirty dollar retail smoke like the original, but it clearly is not. just what do you call it. Don't say good marketing. Frankly I am surprised some starving lawyer has not sued the pants off them.

If you like it smoke it. Some guy could be rolling cigars under a freeway in Cleveland, wouldn't matter to me as long as there good. But I hear ya on the playing off that its something that its really not.

Brendan,
If you check Gerkhas web site, you'll find that the Beauty is no longer listed as a current production cigar. As I said, when out of production cigars show up here cheap, you should show caution. I have no concern at all about general release current production sticks like the Dominus you asked about. In fact I have a couple dozen that I won here.

Yeah but if you look it originally came in one size per the web site butif you go to CI that size if very expensive and now there are three other sizes and cheaper that get no mention on gurkha website

I am seeing that it pays to become worldly in the cigar world and as it stands, I am the equivalent of an Amish 10 year old. I must leave the Amish community and see the world for what it is. I am self-prescribing 2 hours of forum lurking.

After giving this some serious thought I have arrived at the conclusion that overall anything LP(Drew Estate)has done nothing but underwhelmed me personally.I really was expecting something PHENOMINAL after all the hype.Just more $3-4 cigars hyped to the hilt to command their $10+ status. A true disappointment of monumental proportions IMHO.

The Cohbia Red Dot.....what a total waste of my time. Flat, flat, flat, flat. For the price and the hype I was expecting my mouth to sing Halejuiha!! How dissapointing. Maybe the CC's are better, but with my limited expouser to CC's I am thinking not. I sometimes think people are fooling themselves because CC's are a forbidden fruit, so to speak. Oh Well, this is just one man's opinion.

I wouldn't necessarily say that....Most can be had for $10-12 a stick(if you purchase by the box).Thats less than a lot of domestically available's that taste like schit. They're certainly not the best Cuban value either......but I can honestly say I've never had a plugged and or underfilled Cohiba.Their construction is second to none.

Comparing Cohiba's to those red dot wannabes is the epitome of ignorance.I can think of no 2 similarly named cigars that could be farther apart.

why do i have to be ingnorant? I was not comparing, I was wondering. I also stated that I have yet to have the CC Cohbia and if I were to purchase a CC cohbia it would be the belkie, but I have had quite a few CC's and although very good nothing like the hype that surrounds them.

Most of the bros. on here J. that love CC's also have to age them a minimum, depending on the cigar, of two years, in some cases much longer, which makes the smoke much better. So in most cases if the ones you have had were not set down for a long nap they were probably just average at best. I, on the other hand, seek instant gratification. I lack both the patiance and probably time left on this earth to wait for a CC to reach maturity. The last thing I want to do is age a bunch of cigars and then drop dead and let some other ol fart like Ron enjoy the fruits of my labor. Besides that ol fart has more smokes than he will ever be able to smoke anyway. Merry Christmas Ron.............................................

This info on in house reproductions is just a little upsetting for me. As a newbie I thought that I may be getting a taste of a super premium while geting a great price, I have liked most of the Black Pearl line, and the Beauty from Gurkha. Only to find that I haven't received the genuine arcticle. How is someone like me supposed to know? I assume you guys know the difference, but how can I? Disappointed to say the least. Questioning ever doing business with y'all ever again. I feel lied to plain and simple. I thank you guys for the heads up. If that's the case I'll buy from famous and I know their knock offs are just that , because their house blends aren't offered anywhere else. Have a merry christmas and I will be calling cust service to cancel my last order. :-( I got a box of 2007's and I see a definite difference. In my niavety I thought it was just needed some humi time. Now I know they will never reach those flavors. Misrepresentation is not cool. I sell Toyotas, and when you buy one you know what you are getting. I feel like I've been duped, plain and simple.
If this is your normal practice then we are done.

I bought 20 Graycliff G2 turbos Edicion Limitada 2010 toros from CI...are these the real deal, or are they the product of CI getting the licensed nod to produce them? Can someone please educate a cigar-newb. I'd really appreciate it.

Cabaiguan, I generally like Tatuaje's so I gave these a try. I don't think they have any taste at all, just some bitter aftertaste.

When I started off in the hobby, I tried my share of 5 Vegas, Gurkas, Caos and Rocky Patels. Besides the 5 Vegas Miami, I now steer clear of these smokes, but they really didn't let me down as I was just too new to cigars to have an opinion yet.

I have part of cabs from "09" and "10" that are really smoking great. Let me send you a couple to see if you just got a bad batch. This is one of the few CC's that you rarely hear anything bad about including the fresh ones.

IMHO the PSD4 is a great cigar, however young yes they are almost unsmokable and can be horrid. With age these are one of the most amazing sticks coming out of Cuba. The odd thing is I've had some shine by year 2......and others took 4.I think I have some buried from 09 that weren't ready last time I checked.........going on a dive sooooooon.
