893 - Prince Albert in a cob. may have chipped it somehow-small (half a kernel "root" maybe?) out of the rim. Could I keep smoking it now that it has some "character"?

Question from a newbie on pipe smoking.

My regular cob is starting to give me that tar taste to it. I don't use a filter so that is not an issue. Thoughts, suggestions, tips, pointed barbs, and general ribbing are welcome from the peanut gallery.

Hey Bucky, if cleaning isn't possible for your cob, you could try using a Savinelli balsa wood filter in it. The 6mm size fits nicely in Missouri Meeschaum pipes and they are pretty inexpensive. I have had good results doing that.

I run a pipe cleaner though it each time I'm done smoking. I also give the bowl a light scrape with a pipe tool. What other cleaning am I missing?

Possibly let the baccy dry out a bit more before packing? Just thinking out loud....

alcohol on a q-tip in the stem, repeat till clean. let the pipe sit in the sun for a few hours.

It could be the moisture content of the baccy. Or a particular blend has ghosted the pipe. Are your cigars tasting okay? (in case it could be more of a sinus issue)

I would definitely try drying the baccy longer. Most of my issues tend to relate to higher moisture content.

When I first started out, I burnt my first cob using a torch lighter. That was an awful tasting experience. Now I use a Zippo pipe lighter. Matches make me crazy, way too much work.

Not a sinus issue. Definitely a real and moderate hint of tar taste from the pipe. Even in a draw from the pipe with no tobacco in it I get the tar taste.

I bought a 10 pack of the MM cob 2nds so I have enough to remove the two that I've been using out of rotation and let them dry a bit if that's the issue (shrug?)

When I get my tobacco, I put it straight away into mason jars. Maybe I need to let the pinch dry a bit more before packing the bowl.

Either way, all is good.

Get you some bristled pipe cleaners.Once every couple months use them and some bourbon to really break that tar down. It'll leave the bowl and stem pretty wet so either bake it in the sun for several hours or just let it set a few days.I'm always amazed at what I can get out of a clean pipe.I also like the bourbon flavor it leaves in the pipe.......it'll be gone after a bowl or two. Some use vodka or rum........pick your favorite poison and get after it.
