You've already known your kids are better than everyone. Now you've got the law your side!

Attorneys for Texas teen Ethan Couch claimed that his "affluenza" meant he was blameless for driving drunk and causing a crash that left four people dead in June.

Simply put, Couch, 16, claims that his condition stemmed from having wealthy, privileged parents who never set limits for him.

Judge Jean Boyd sentenced him Tuesday to 10 years of probation but no jail time, saying she would work to find him a long-term treatment facility.

Heard about this on the radio Friday, really ticked me off. I guess next time he's drunk and kills somebody he'll go to jail. So can poor kids use an excuse that there so poor that they don't know right from wrong? Oh wait they can't afford lawyers…

Fine, send the F'ing parents to jail.

How can the judge allow this junk science as evidence?

BTW, it's not just the rich, it also applies to parents who cannot say no. Talk about a a license for murder and mayhem. Frying pan Frying pan Frying pan

The kid is going to a $400,000+ a year treatment center. It is fair to say you have to be rich to afford that as a parent. That from NBC Nightly News.

Nice incentive for kids in school though.

Get good grades, get a great job with lots of money, and you can kill people in a lower social strata without doing time. Or at least your kids can.

How much do you think mommy and daddy pitched in to the judge's reelection campaign?

wow what a great decision. Blame the parents for being enablers and then enable him to kill people and get away with it. Way to make a stand and prove a point. there should be a judge vacancy in the near future imo. Agree with charge the parents then if that is going to be the defenses case, someone needs to go to jail for this.

Nice of the judge to reinforce the fact the kid is spoiled, not held accountable for his own actions, and having money is an excuse for getting away with murder.

The American justice system at it's finest. Money always does the talking. If he was a poor black kid he'd be fried in the media and the Prez would have to come to his rescue. Just another rich white boy getting special treatment. Nothing new here.

If this pisses you off, imagine how enraged it could make you if you hear criminals bragging about how they got a light sentence.

Or you read their rap sheet and see a charge was dropped for "furtherance of justice".

There IS no justice in this world.

We could really learn something from the North Korean justice system.

I have no idea, but I think it means the judge dropped the charge because he or she either feels it is the right thing to do to see justice served, or it was part of a plea agreement. I duuno for sure.

If it's any consolation, it is a guilty verdict, which makes the civil suits pretty open and shut. Those are probably going to bankrupt the family.

Exactly. The poor, nonwhite, homosexuals, handicapped, illegals, elderly, young, women and now the rich are all victims of society.
That leaves 15 middle aged white guys in Poughkeepsie who can be held accountable for everything.

If Obama could have more effectively redistributed wealth, this snot-nosed kid's parents wouldn't have been able to buy the judge.

I wasn't saying that what happened was right, just that the family's punishment isn't done and might be worse than jail time, at least to them. The consolation prize would feel like millions of dollars, which won't bring them back, but neither will a few years of jail time. It gets really complicated, as some people want justice rather than restitution, others want to see rehabilitation rather than punishment... I definitely can't imagine that a poor inner city youth who's parents never taught him right from wrong would get to use this same defense successfully.

But yes, it is a ridiculous situation and if it I was a family member of the wronged in this case, I would be livid.

I'm sure most posters here would have preferred their child to get 20 years in prison instead of 10 years probation. In fact, they probably would have testified against their child at the sentencing hearing.

And what's your point here HD, this IS how every subject no matter the content gets DISTORTED. Somehow being able to somehow lessen the gravity of any situation because of " personal attachment " while looking the other way when it comes to ACCOUNTABILITY.

Please reference #17....... Just because it's the way things are... Doesn't make it Right. The course that our Right to legal counsel / representation is a SHAM. I don't believe our Founding Fathers meant it to be this way. How much one's net worth is IS NOT how representation is to work. Once again the reason why there will ALWAYS be a great separation between the wealthy and the middle class / poor, and moreover lending some understanding to the general attitude toward the very wealthy. Completely different set of rules and Laws to live byBrick wall

You can't figure out my point???

I'm saying every one of you are full of crap. You're all having your little pity party comparing how many knots in the rope you would tie to hang that kid but in reality if it were your kid, you would spend every penny on getting him the best defense possible and the lightest sentence possible. You're all enablers of affluenza.

The Founding Fathers were rich white dudes. A bunch of them owned slaves. I'm not sure they're turning over in their graves.

There will always be great separation between the wealthy, middle class, and poor because....wait for it.....they're wealthy, middle class, and poor! I tried to sell you people torches & pitchfork sets before. Not falling for it again.
