Which sort of speaks to the crux of the problem of so many of us talking past each other when it comes to racist stuff.

What is more important in the labeling of something or someone as racist? The way it is meant/intended? Or the way it is received/perceived?

Might require a Plato cave-level discussion to sort through it, but it is important, I think. If someone who has zero knowledge or context of the history of, say...the n word -- is it racist if he uses it? Is the word racist? Or the meaning and/or the user of the word?

Not entirely relevant, maybe, but I can't help but think about Randall in Clerks II when he wants to take back the words 'porch monkey'. Was a good dialog -- may not advance the discussion much, but it is sort of thoughtful

Depends on how the "offended" person reacts.
If they cry RACIST! then they need to just stfu.
If they explain how or why they're offended, then at least it's a discussion.

If a word or expression has evolved into something devoid of racial overtones, the history shouldn't matter if it's used in a non-derogatory manner. No one has the absolute right to never be offended.

I told this story to someone earlier today. It’s absolutely true. Prior to this I’d not thought much about the go back home mantra. It does help me understand why my wife might see it differently than me.

Once I ran in to a Quick Trip and left her in the car with the two kids. They were around 6 and 8 years old. When I came out there was a nasty lougie on my passenger side windshield. Apparently someone screamed at her to go back home and spit at her.

This is common. The phrase means something to my wife that it may not to you. Maybe you are clueless about it. I don’t believe Trump is. And if he was he isn’t now. He is using it. Sorry. Threshold crossed.

Even if you think you should be able to tell everyone that, knowing what you know now maybe you should be more selective. Or maybe it’s more important to you to continue even knowing how it’s received. Your choice. You are what you are.

Trump knows exactly what he is doing and it’s a conscious tactical choice. I don’t know anyone pretends to defend it.

I'll wait with baited breath for your next totally unrelated anecdote.

You've latched on to the "go home" portion of the phrase and are purposely ignoring the "fix those problems and then come back here and show us how it's done".

Disingenuous at best.

And yes. The person who spit and said those words to your family deserves to die a slow and painful death. That's not ignorance. That's hatred.

Thanks dstieger. Once you realize someone finds something offensive and you continue anyway, especially if it is BECAUSE you know they find it offensive then you’ve crossed a threshold. Call it whatever you like but I’m glad I’m not the one trying to defend or normalize that.

For the record, if you continue using a term BECAUSE the audience is offended, then yes I agree.

I don't think this is relevant to the discussion, but as a stand alone statement I find it to be true.

edit: And it's WHY the rally chant was so disgusting.

And yet you still haven't answered my simple questions. You fixate on "oh, but he totally asked them to come back later!" while missing ....well ... all the points.

Sometimes folks just don’t want to get it. It’s fine. I said earlier I’m not trying to convince. Folks are who they are.

So someone disagrees with you and it's because THEY don't want to get it.

LOL!

And then you claim you're "not trying to convince anyone".

Double LOL!

Convince us of what? Of your viewpoint that you're blaming ME for not "getting"?

It's called a discussion. We have different viewpoints. I understand what you're saying but I disagree. You don't have to repeatedly say you're not trying convince me (which proves just the opposite, by the way).

I'm sorry for laughing.
It's just funny when you try to be condescending with such a moronic point of view.
You should leave that for victor. He's good at it.

I simply meant we will have to agree to disagree. I didn’t realize you would take it differently. Sometimes folks hear things differently than intended.

One can blame someone for "not getting it", and disagree with them, and not necessarily be trying to convince them all at the same time.

It's your fault for not understanding something very simple.
It's fine to disagree with someone when they don't understand a clear concept.
The vocal disagreement may not be to convince the individual who clearly does not have the capacity to understand, but to ensure that others understand there are other views than your incorrect one.

See... easy peasy.

and you still haven't answered my easy 7 questions.

Sometimes folks don’t want to get it. I don’t want to get tails point. I’m a folk.

It’s fine. That’s ok.

I’m not trying to convince. There’s no need to convince me either.

Folks are who they are. They can disagree and so can I. I don’t pretend to know how or why they think the way they do. That would be asinine.

You’re a legend in your own mind and you always “claim victory” even though there’s no documented proof of you ever achieving victory even against Drafter......pretty sure the only thing you ever beat was a homeless dude and one out of three STD tests. Good for you buddy!!

there are still some people who think Nixon was a great POTUS...I'm guessing historians would grade this presidency similar to his...some positive achievements on the surface but the rot went to the core...

I'm gonna guess "some positive posts on the surface, but the poor reasoning went to the core..."
