Can usually navigate Awkward well. Probably because I have created a fair number of those type interactions. Here's one which pooped up yesterday.

For a series of years, I had no contact with this year. About 6 months ago, on a whim reached out to them. They were initially wary- Why are you reaching out now? What are you looking to achieve? What do you want? etc.

Once they realized there wasn't an angle, just me checking in, it was a nice series of friendly texts. Got caught up, suggested we stay in touch loosely and went our separate ways. Felt good about it.

Yesterday, I got a text with a request for a favor. Someone they know is in their mid-40s, has ALS and about the only thing which still gives with person joy is cigars. The suggested route would be for the person who reached out to the ALS person, find out their cigar preferences, share those preferences with me, and asked if I might be able to round up some smoke donations. The would provide the ALS person's address making it easy for anyone to donate directly to them.

My wife's suggested course is to not be a part of it.

Sooooo. What do you folks think?

I agree with your wife. That being said, I would probably offer to send em a cbid fiver and wish them luck. YMMV

No good deed goes unpunished.

Reeks of some sort of ASPD... the first thought that you wanted something from them... one thing I learned from lower functioning minds is that they tend to apply their own traits to other people because of their inability to empathize...

So therefore if they ever reach out, expect them to ask for something or try to shame you into something.

Based on the information provided, I don't see anything wrong with your course of action and would be happy to contribute if I have some stuff that fit's their smoking preferences.

If they are looking to be a mooch, then it's one time offer to help someone in need and then all done.

Always better to give, however, if the "preferences" are super premium cigars or something not sold on Cigarbid, I'd be suspicious.

Sounds sketchy to me . Maybe see what the preferences are and go from there. If premiums I would have to send Gurkhas. People in need should not say they want Padrons they should be happy with what they recieve. I would not actually send Gurkhas I would not do that to anyone unless they ask.

I know better than that, I may have been born during the day but I wasn't born yesterday.

I could give you MACs address in CA though.

Can you even smoke a cigar if you have ALS?

I wouldn't get involved at all.

That would not do me any good. I do have a few Gurkhas hiding. I would of course have to send other stuff.

Good points. I’ve reached back to them if they would be okay with me to be less opaque on where the ask is coming from. It is additionally awkward because this person would rather be completely anonymous for reasons I understand, but they have played a role on the CigarBid boards for a not insignificant period of time.

Will see where it goes from here.

Thank you, Brothers.

Opaque or transparent is none of my business about who or what. If sending some cigars to someone in the Cbid community who would appreciate them, I'd be happy to help. I have too many anyway.

I don't blame Russ, or any of you for that matter, for being suspicious.

First off, for those of you here who might remember me, I used to be known here as "ruggysgirl." My name is Heather. I have not been affiliated with Rugrunner for the past 12 years or so, save for the fact that we have two kids together. If there is any concern about donated cigars going to him, please be assured that I would not give him the time of day to save his immortal soul.

A little background . . . I got to know Chris through is wife, Vicki, who was my daughter's paraprofessional in school. He was diagnosed with ALS about 5 or 6 years ago, and it is very aggressive. Chris can no longer work, and one of the few things he has left that he can truly enjoy is a cigar.

I reached out to Russ because I had no intention of coming back here. I truly do not want any interaction with Rugrunner, and I know that he has tried to come back on at least one occasion. I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Chris. I'm hoping to get him hooked up with this group, because I think he would enjoy interacting with you all and learning more about cigars.

If you don't want to participate, I'm totally cool with that. I plan on heading to the local to pick up some smokes for him later this week. Peace.

Chris likes mild, creamy smokes. Because he has lost some, but not all, fine motor dexterity in his hands he prefers a larger cigar as they are easier for him to hold.

If anyone has another other questions, please feel free to ask me directly. I'm not going to give out any more personal details without Chris' permission, since this was supposed to be a surprise for him. I will PM his address to anyone who wants to participate.

Well, ****. I was wrong. I just checked Facebook, and he prefers medium bodied, large ring gauge, creamy cigars. See what happens when a non-cigar smoking person who hasn't talked cigars in over a decade decides to wade back in???? FML.

Don't worry. Admins don't check that chit all that often.

I'll do some searching. When you say large ring, is 50 too small or right on the line, or what do you think?

Medium bodied is a better bet on my end, I think I'll be able to scare up a baggie or two.

I think 50 would be right on the line. I know that he has had to start using some adaptive equipment. He's a pretty clever fellow, so once he can't hold them I'm sure he'll rig something up.

Also, since I'm not a cigar smoker and have been out of the loop for many years, I would appreciate recommendations. Chris did give me some specific brands, but one is a "wish list" cigar and I'd rather get him 5 good cigars than one wish list cigar, and another is one that isn't sold here on CBid. Since they are kind enough to let me use their forum, I feel like I should purchase some from them. Thanks in advance.

The only tricky part with his flavor profile is Medium Bodied and Creamy generally don't go together. Creamy is an attribute of Connecticut, milder cigars.

In themselves big ring gauges isn't an issue. My personal preference is for rings 50 and smaller, so I don't have anything is his gauge range. There are a fair amount of 54 rings and above in the auctions here.

There are two samplers I saw (Diesel and Ave Maria) with those larger rings. Most of those are in the medium zone, although none of those suggest creaminess in the description.

Leaf by Oscar - Sumatra sweet creamy and mild also has a large ring gauge.
