Dave,

All I can say is, "Oh my God!"
I finally got to enjoy your little sampler of Arkansas' finest and it was probably one of the best I've had!

Smooth as silk.....my man, I'm impressed (and a little tipsy)!

Your Grandfather was a talented man!!!!!!!!

Hey Sonny,
Glad you enjoyed it. My Grandfather did make some good stuff. Too bad he died with the recipe, mine is pale in comparison. Of course, his is aged much more than mine has, got 4 years on mine.
Have a great one

WOW - somebody out there still makes the stuff ... good to hear ... I figured that by now it would have been a lost trade ... that stuff's even hard to find back in WV (where I grew up).

Yep Jimmy,
We still, make it, in Arkansas. It is hard to find, even harder to find the good stuff. Most of the people, who make whiskey, make it for personal consumption, but some still make it for sale. I make mine to drink myself, and share with friends, just like the Beer, wine, and Mead, that I make. My grandfathers stuff, was found after he died, and my grandmother told me, that he quit making it after prohibition ended. Making it aged, around 50 years, in a spanish sherry cask. I allow myself 1 Liter a year, of his. I want to save enough, for my children, if I ever have any, and theirs, to see, first hand, the history of the family.

HB -

Glad to hear it's still out there ... sounds like you've got yourself quite the stash for a rainy day ... and - btw - try giving some of it to the wifey - guaranteed way for you two to end up having kids ....

Last batch of the 'good-stuff' I was able to get ahold of didn't have any character of flavor whatsoever ... they're just not making it like they used to and 'aging' doesn't really happen when it's stored in recycled wine bottles ... I'm still a firm believer that the filter media used and storage casks are make the juice because anybody can boil water in a radiator ....

hi all, this post got my attention! Made me post for the first time. Only had cb.com for about 2 weeks now ( LOVE IT ). Looks like i found some fellow kindred spirits, im new to cigars but do know some about whiskeys. I have an address you can look at if you like umm homebrewing. Homedistilling.org mostly likely if you have a qstion this site will give you the answer and more. My grandmother tells me how her dad had delivered a small barrel of his special stuff to the gov. of Idaho! (of course during probation) those were the days. I sadly do not have anything my great or grandfather had made. Guess ill just have to make some for my grand kids :) I think ill go post qstions about cigars i seek many answers. Hi and see you around.

I know about brewing your own beer. And I used to do that. I've made some of the best beer I've ever had, and some of the worst... But I'm not familar with what it takes to make your own hooch. Is it hard? I know about aging, which is interesting because beer can and should be enjoyed immediately.

Homedistilling.org can help you. Keep it on the the downlow distilling isnt realy on the legal side. Mostly just dont ever sell it! if big brother doesnt get his tax he will come for you. Dont let me scare ya you can look at the ATF page and see how the have been enforcing these laws = nill almost. I can be alot of fun, BBQ, friends, smokes and spirits what else could you want on a friday night?

Thanks for the link,
It may come in handy. I am working on learning corn whiskey, what most of the locals make up here. My grandfather, and I made barley whiskey, in the Irish style. Not much differnt than brewing beer, leave out the hops, then after primary, and secondary, distill instead of bottle. Then age in oak casks, I use an old spanish sherry cask.

P.S. Gotta work in the morning, or I would get on a roll, on this subject.

brew, how is your hooch? What does it compare with? I'm curious. Very curious. As I said, I brewed damn good beer. My wife doesn't like me to drink Scotch which is the only hard stuff I like.

Hey Robbie,
I compare mine to Jamesons Irish whiskey, though mine is a little young yet, currently only 4 years old, I take a taste every year, and it has improved with age. I plan on a minimum 8 years aging, in the cask, before bottling, but may be longer depending on the taste. I also have a 3 year old, and a 2 year old, as well as a batch in the works, will rack it into secondary sunday night, Then distill in two weeks.
I brew a fair amount of beer, as well. I prefer Stouts, brown ales, and IPAs. I also make Mead, and wine, both fruit and grape. I live next door to a University Experimental fruit substation, and the bring me enough fruit to make 60 gal. of peach wine, 40 gal. of strawberry wine, and 100 gal. of red table wine. This is every year. I may seem like a lush, but I have a town full of friends, and throw parties on a regular basis, though I consume just a little bit myself, 2-4 glasses of something every day, wine with meals, beer sometimes, depends on the food. And always a shot of scotch, or Irish whiskey before bed. I may make alot of stuff, but I go for quality rather than quantity. Yes this was my primary hobby, before I started collecting cigars.
I better watch out, I'm rambling.
