i have only some opinions from some of the old timers that own cigar stores and did when it was legal to smoke cuban cigars. less then 20% of their sales were cuban. that was before the crop of new cigars coming out of the DR and other places which are vastly better then the domestic and imports were then.

you say you would pay 2 to 3 times for isoms then someone else would. i don't understand that statement. why would you pay that much more then someone else. an isom monte #5 is $4.00 - $5.00, a #2 is about $6.00, an "A" is about $28.00. a hemmingway masterpiece is as good as the "A" and is about half the price. are you paying more?

My wife likes white chocolate. I don't even consider it chocolate. I like dark. How much time can we devote to how wrong she is and how right I am? Or vice versa.

If you take the politics out of it, it's just a matter of taste. There are great cigars coming out of Honduras, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, and Cuba.

If the Canadians and the Yankees were offered the same choices at the same prices, they would on average make the same decisions. Most of us don't smoke Habanos and Opus X every day or every week because we can't afford to. Some who can, don't.

limoric, have you tried the CAO Brazilia?

"you say you would pay 2 to 3 times for isoms then someone else would. I don't understand that statement."

I didn't say I would, I said I do. Wow $5, that's like $7 CAN. Before our taxes went up in 2002, a Monte #5 was $11, now it's $19, Monte #4 $24, Monte #3 $29, all in CAN $ which is 0.74 now, yahooooooo. I went on to say that for this reason I am looking for an alternative. I used to smoke Cuban’s 2x per week now it's 1x per month. I have been mostly smoking C-bid smokes since Oct. 2002, T Day, that's Tax Day. Smokes are up to 25% cheaper in other provinces, but if you buy online or over the phone, by law they have to ad on the extra tax and with shipping it can be more.

I recall reading many times that most of the Premium cigars before the embargo was Cuban or had Cuban tobaccos in them. Maybe more $0.25 sticks were sold before 1963 and maybe the premium market was much small than. But I have to go with you old timers, if you say it's so. Makes me want to read my stack of mags again.

I know that in Canada, before T-Day, if money didn't matter so much and you weren't a newbe you smoked Cuban cigars, all the shops I went to sold mostly Cuban's. Most af the cigars sold in Europe are Cuban. However I have noticed that in the past 5 years more and more shelf space has been opened for the Domestic variety and now that taxes are so crazy I'm sure more Domestic’s will get smoked in Canada, I'm already proof.

My whole point from before, and supported by a few others was. If you take the U.S market out of cigar sales, there is a particular cigar that gets sold more than all others. It's been that way up until now. Why?? It's very possible that as the U.S domestic variety develop more markets this may change.

eleltea - "limoric, have you tried the CAO Brazilia?"

No I haven't. As I admitted before I've only tried about 20 domestics and have not found them to be as good as an average Cuban. Don't worry guy's I will some day soon smoke a domestic that's better than a Cuban, trust me I want to.

My biggest point is. I think an average Cuban beats out an average domestic. Premium for premium may be a different story

I'll take a Padron maddie over any Cuban anyday!
Doesn't even need to be an anniversary.

Except for PSD 3 EL's - Those things are excellent.I have an unopened box, still in the shipping wrapper with the stamps on it from Australia. I've marked it: "To be opened on the passing of Fidel Castro".
Yer all invited!

rwestcot - you gotta tell us how many of the variety you've had, otherwise your comment is just a comment with no merit. A newbe will read you comment whisper it to the little boy or girl sitting in the circle next to him and than perception has been created which leads to propaganda which leads to less Cuban's smoked. hehe

By the way your last comment contradicted your first.

I've had 1 Padron, sucked, but even I know 1 is not enough to write off the rest so I will smoke the whole line before passing judgment.

Not saying you know nothing about Cuban's, I just perceived it.

Now now Limoric...... I beg your padron....I mean pardon.. Don't go dissing Padrons.... To many of us, these are prized and favored. They have a marvelous dintinctive flavor (or is that "flavour" in Canadian) much like rich coffee. They get very high ratings from both magazines and cigar smokers. Like your Cubans, Nicaraguans have a certain flavor profile, rich in coffee/cocoa tastes. And what I love about Padrons them is their consistency. There are just about the best nicaraguan out there. I have hardly ever had a bad Padron and I smoke 3-4 of them every week. Even the el cheapo Padron Fumas or Londres are a consistently enjoyable smokes. You said you had 1 of these... My respect for the validity of your opinions just went down a notch (maybe two)

Hey dbguru, I said, "one wasn't enough to pass judgment", I was making a point that just because one wasn't good, it doesn't mean that the rest of them aren't. I plan to smoke the whole line eventually because they are so recommended.

I was just hacking on rwestcot a bit. Pleeeeeeeeez take me back.

My current cuban inventory consists of a half box of Coros, half box of OK Monte 2 from 01, 1 and a half box of RASS and 1 1/2 box of PSD3 (1 of which is mentioned above. I have Padron Churchills, Delicias, 2000's, Executives, panatelas, a full untouched box of 03 PAM Imperials (Holding for an upcoming event) and a half box of Monarcas. The Executives have a little too much volado so the flavor is not as rich as the others. My full cigar inventory covers 3 humidors, 1 coolerdor and a huge tupperdor - 1 is my Ashton Humi - 75 count, 1 is my acidor (Actually more like naturaldor), the 300 count is for mixed bag.
Hopefully I have attained "Merit" in yer eyes ;)
It is all Cbid's fault!

BTW don't get me wrong, I enjoy Cubans. I am a rare bird that enjoys non ISOM's, for the most part, equally. And Mr. Jose O. Padron and Family makes my favorite smokes. Also little boys and girls shouldn't smoke.

You have merit with me. Now I know why you feel the way you do. You guys are making a pretty good case for non-ISOM's. And I do want to find that Cuban taste I love so much in the non variety.

Padron's, on my short list, which ones do you think I should steer towards.

coros? What are they?

Cohiba Robustos. I like the 46 gauge maddie padrons the best, and the naturals have a unique flavor (I have many friends who don't care for them). Try a maddie churchill. Be careful about smoking Anniversary Maduros. You won't want your other smokes for a while. :)

rwestcot - Recommendation coppied and pasted. I will Keep my eye's peeled for a 5 pack on C-bid or maybe aquire by way of trade.

Don't care much for Cohiba. I'm more into Partagas and R&J. Used to smoke a lot of Jose Piedras for 4 buck, but since the taxes went up here, they're now 9 bucks. Just doesn't make sense anymore. I know I can get a better stick for 9 bucks south of the boarder as long as I don't pay duty. I've been lucky.

You won't find it. I guess you could liken this to differences in soft drinks. Diferent Cubans are like Coke and Pepsi where non Cubbies are like 7up and Sprite. The closest I've found to the twang is Camacho Havanas.

Now we've started back to the top. There's got to be a few more, there's enough advertising of it.

The best I've had so far is the Indian Tobac Super Feurte. It didn't come close, but it's come the closest.

Was recommended La perla Habana, so I've got a bid on some of those I think I might win. I really want to try the La Gloria Cubana series R line. Will go for some of those in a few weeks.

I just had a Series R #5 yesterday. Another fantastic smoke.

You're right, back to the top lol. Then again, sometimes cubans don't taste like cubans. If you live in havana, would you be trying to search the island for a cigar that tastes like a Partagas #4. They are all different to an extent, and all that matters is that you not only enjoy the cigar, but enjoy your time smoking it.

My sister only likes Ben and Jerrys Vanilla Ice cream. Don't know what made me think of that. I'm going to go and bid on some Phillies Blunts now lol

rwestcot - Point well made. Phillies Blunts.., I'm assuming that's like King Edwards Blunts. Was gifted a 5 pack of the Kings 18 mo ago. First one I had at the party. It was so terrible that I had to have a good smoke when I got home and strait wisky to get rid of the taste. Funny, I put them in the humi out of habit; they were in there for 7 or 8 mo before I took them out to hand out at a BBQ to moochers. As the night progressed and I ran out of smokes, I smoked the last 2 in the pack back to back, they actually weren't bad. still will never buy.

I went to kick off my weekend with a Perdomo 2 Madie, but it didn't do it for me. So I put it out. I'm very serious about my first Friday night schmoke...

So I dug in to the ploomidoor... A Monte #2 Habano! Man!! With some age on it. There's something "special" about a good habano... When I lit it, it had almost a purfumeie flavor to it? It developed, got more complex. But not overpowering, stayed nice and medium body throughout. Down to the nub... I'm sorry, I'm a BIG fan of dominican, honduran, nic, etc... But there IS just something very special about a good ISOM...

cwilhelmi - Saw the picture, left a message on the other board.

cwilhelmi is a made man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Robby - I could smell that Monte from here, I was wondering what that smell was. After I get the line up from cwilhelmi, I think there's a pretty good chance I'll be influenced into joining the fan club.
