Remind me: when was this war fought by veterans against foreign invaders bent on changing our national language???...er, correction, we DO NOT have a national language...free country = you can speak whatever you want...

I vote that the most meaningless and pointless bumper sticker of the year.

Actually, I’d argue that without our veterans this bumper sticker would be exactly right.

Imagine for a moment that America didn’t get involved in World War Two. Do you really believe that Hitler would have been content with just Europe? Without our boys charging Omaha beach, we most likely would be speaking German.

Yo jdr: How dare you speak for those that fought for our country. " we DO NOT have a national language", yeah right if your talking about your country Russia. Answer me this what language was used by your teachers here in America as you bluffed your way through the school system, could it have been ENGLISH. JonR

JonR, your message comes across pretty harsh. Are you aware that, though english is the most common language used, the USA does not have an official language. I think that was JDR's point, however poorly it may have been delivered.

English should be the official language. Do you know very many successful folks in this country, that dont speak English? I dont.

JD, you are correct, about English not being the official language. But wouldnt you promote English, as a persons MAIN language to become as successful as possible?

John seems very bitter.

He grasps the obvious facts very well, but lacks any sense of perspective.

Uh, a bit off the topic, but in reply to jdrabinski.

I fail to understand the comment about us NOT having a national language. My grand father had it drummed into him that english is the national language and should speak it, so he did. He spoke Salish until he was 8.
I am bothered by the fact that we are being pushed to learn a language that, quite frankly, I have no desire to learn. It also bothers me that employers are being pushed to hire people who do not speak english, then have to hire interpreters.
Just my opinion.

It was a requirement for us to learn more than one language in school to achieve an advanced academic diploma and again in college as core for engineering. Communication in any language is a good start, but as long as the currency I use day to day has english printed on it "primaily" then I can only presume that english is the "national language." Thank you to those serving to protect our civil liberties and freedom!

Here's the INS requirement for citizenship:

Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:

have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 15 years or more and are over 55 years of age;
have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for periods totaling 20 years or more and are over 50 years of age; or
have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicant’s ability to learn English

Sounds pretty "official" to me

Many of you may be under the impression that, or had drummed into you that, English is the official language of the U.S., but you'd be sorely mistaken. If so, there'd be no need for this organization:

http://www.us-english.org/inc/

For those who think we fought Hitler to protect our borders, I'll say two things:

1. This is a novel interpretation of history. You may be the first to argue it. But I'll stick with the standard stories rather than those invented on a cigar bbs.

2. To claim this about our part in WWII in Europe actually overlooks our much nobler motivations. You debase the heroism and leadership of our predecessors by reducing that war and its losses to something as pat and self-interested as protecting our borders. That was a shining moment of American history, one that this peculiar theory debases and disrespects.

To Mag, who made the only respectful query: I agree with you. Not learning English is a poor decision, if one wants to enter the workplace beyond ethnic neighborhoods. But not everyone chooses that, and that's their right. If you want to speak only Russian, Croatian, Chinese, Spanish, French, etc., hey, this is a country that, because of its inalienable freedoms, will not interfere with your choice.

John, not bitter at all. Just concerned with mass misinformation.

Hmmm that’s odd. I re-read my post several times and I don’t recall saying we went to war with Germany to protect our own boarders. I merely said that if we didn’t, we’d probably be speaking German.

I believe as America, we just don’t go to war just to protect our own boarders; we go to war to protect freedom… our freedom and the freedom of others. Are you going to tell me that if Hitler conquered the world, we’d be free to speak English?

I’m sorry, but I fail to see your logic…

Let's cut through the semantics ... while English is not the "Official" language de jure (as a matter of law), it IS the official language de facto (as a matter of practical fact) ...

Endless catering to those unwilling to adapt to that reality damages their ability to be genuinely productive and viable citizens ... it is no different than laming a child by not toilet training him/her ...
