Hey yall! This is my first post, so please respond! I am a little bit confused. My father, who by the way generally has great taste, has reccomended his two favorite cigars for me to try: Fuente Fuente Opus X Perfexion #2, and Red Dot Cohiba Churchill. In fact, he gave me one of each for my 18th birthday. Well, I smoked them both and I liked them alright, the Opus more, but a day or two after, I read in an article that Kirk and James of Metallica both smoke Lars Teten and Acid cigars. Well, I ordered one of both, a Lars Teten Bigger and an Acid Earthiness. The Lars was excellent. Better than the Cohiba, but not as good as the Fuente, but the Acid blew them both away! The thing that confuses me, though, is aren't Cohiba and Fuente supposed to be some of the best cigars in the world? I play guitar, and with the guitar, the higher price and brand name are usually great indicators of the quality of the guitar. I guess this isn't how it is for cigars. What do you guys think about Acid or Lars?

Do I see a horse appearing in the horizon? Nah, it's dead! Whack it then! The horse!!! ...... whack the horse, fer chrissakes!!! Erhmmmm.....

I'll better direct you to the right place before some of the guys point their flame throwers your way.

Use the "Search the boards-option", type acid or lars and click the blue button. A whole lot of **** should appear.

This topic has been up (one to) many times, lots of info on this.

Anyway, welcome to the board!

Why doesn't Lars (Ulrich) smoke Lars?...Just one of my morning "deep thoughts"..LOL...Welcome to the board!..I know I will P*ss a few of you off when I say this but overall, IMHO (I repeat..I M H O ) Lars and Acids are cigars made for those that are too (fill in the blank..."weak?" "girly?"...Hell, I don't know...I'm tired) to smoke REAL cigars..I will enjoy an occasional (which means once a year) Acid Blondie or Lars Shorty, as Jack can attest to...They do have some impressive construction and are a nice change of pace...Those of you that ONLY smoke Lars or Acids, I don't trust any of ya!...When I'm tired, I tend to be brutally honest..LOL...Although Cohiba Red Dots aren't far behind in taste...Have a nice LGC Series R or a VSG..They'll both put some hair on your chest...Goodnight!....KC

I'm feeling helpful today, so let me try to help you :) Lars, for the most part, are overpriced, bundle cigars dipped in patchouli. ACID is a real cigar that is similar in smell to the Lars, but a superior cigar. The ACID is made, ground up, by Drew Estate and is ACTUALLY a real cigar (despite what others may say), the only difference being that the ACID tobacco has had it's flavoring added/infused, during the fermentation process. Since you're new to the world of cigars, I suggest you go to cigaraficionado.com and read the "Cigars 101" section or go to cigarnexus.com for info, then smoke the cheap stuff you find on auction here at cigarbid so you can build your palate, then step up to the Opus X and beyond. Hope that helps :) (BTW, Cohiba Red Dot is NOT a good cigar (it has great construction, but is WAY overpriced), it's a poseur cigar for those who think, "Oh, Cuban Cohibas are good, that must mean these Red Dots are just as good. Let me drop $20 on this cigar because this is probably as close to a Cuban Cohiba as I'm gonna get." take care.

IMHO most of the price tag on a Lars/Acid product is going towards there packaging, bands and advertising. The cigars are well constructed, beautiful looking cigars. The "flavor" is not worth 1/4 the price. If you like the "aroma" then you're paying for it. I personally don't.....clip clop, clip clop :)

But isn't it silly how popular they are at auction. There must be more kids bidding than I thought.

Well, newbie, if you are impressed with the cigars because the Mettalica gang smokes them, then smoke the damn things........they are horrible! I do know a few guys on this site, who have really good taste in cigars, and enjoy the two cigars in question! I do not care for either and would not smoke them.....Welcome to the board. Charlie

Seems to be the age old battle. Something is done a certain way for eons, then a newbie comes along and some people are cool with em and some people aren't. Kinda sounds like message boards..... Anywho, I'll bet there are a good percentage of folk who poo-poo the flavor cigars, but only out of tradition, having not actually tried one themselves. Myself being one of the have-not-tried, I must say I have no desire to. Should I care for a Pina Colada, I will make myself one to drink with my Perdomo.

I have an empty Padron box I kept a couple of Acids in that a friend gave me over a year ago. I open it on my coffee table to combat the stale smoke and beer aromas the morning after the band practice at my house. I didn't really care for smoking incense, but to each his own.

The members of Metallica are probably older than most guys here :) LMAO! An example of why you shouldn't smoke a certain cigar just because a band you dig does; Aerosmith smoking Lars. I think that statement in SMOKE Mag by Steven Tyler will hurt Lars' sales even more than they are already hurting.

Smoked a Lars once. Just once. Never tried Acid, although the thought has crossed my mind. I read that they are truly a well made cigar, and that you don't actually TASTE the scented stuff. Question is: Then WHY do they put it in there? Marketing is my guess. But if they truly had a great smoke then it shouldn't need a GIMMICK. If they were less expensive I would try one. They're not, and I won't. Now excuse me while I sip my hazelnut coffee...not!

I don't doubt that I'm one of the older guys on this board.(closer to 70 than 40) I smoked Habanos before the embargo. My electric guitar is a '95 Charvel custom ship in solid oiled koa, made lovingly in Ontario, California, acoustic is a Seagull S6+ from Quebec, but I also have an old Bronson square neck Hawaiian guitar, a Stella tenor, and numerous baritone ukes...from Favilla to Harmony to Kamaka...but as luck would have it, I also have had carpal tunnel syndrome for several years. I can barely play a few chords anymore and it really pi$$es me off. The only flavored cigars I'd ever smoked were an occasional Wm Crooks rum soaked, but who hasn't. I tried a Lars but couldn't get through it. The herbal oils just didn't let up. I bid here on an Acid assortment and a 5 pack of Natural roots. Both were delivered last week. Today I lit up the Acid cigar from the tin that was about a 7 by 50 size. It really was well made. The wrapper was quite thin and arrived in poor condition, but that's another tale. I had to use fruit pectin so it didn't unwrap. I smoked it outside though I lit it in the kitchen. My wife remarked that it smelled very nice. I enjoyed it for what it was; a beautifully constructed cigar with aromatics added. There will be situations where an Acid will be welcome where my LGC en cedros will not. I will keep a few around in a special humidor away from my other cigars. The Natural Roots don't appear to have any of the herbal aromatics. But to smoke anything because someone does in a band is beyond my comprehension. Jim Morrison choked the chicken on stage. I don't recall that a bunch of aspiring 18-year-old rockers followed suit. I don't care for Acid or Lars much -- although ocassionally I will pick up one as a change of pace. I prefer my cigars to taste like ---- tobacco.

BTW, as a general rule in life, try not to take your cues from rock stars. James and Kirk are excellent musicians but to smoke a Lars because they do (or buy an ESP overpriced Japanese guitar because that's what Kirk plays) is ludicrous.

P.S. I must be an old-timer because I still play my 1984 Kramer Baretta.

They weren't the only reason that I tried them. For some reason, even though all of you seem to be totally adamant(sp?) against the Acid line, they are still one of the best selling cigars in the country. Why is that? Just food for thought.....

From Joey_caster:"For some reason, even though all of you seem to be totally adamant(sp?) against the Acid line, they are still one of the best selling cigars in the country. Why is that? Just food for thought....." Joey C.--Jon Drew, the major domo of Drew Estates has busted his butt to market his products. He started off with conventional cigar lines, but didn't reach any level of real success. There's little doubt he saw how Lars Tetens appealed to a youth market and decided that this was an area he should explore with a similar line of cigars. Jon, himself, is a pretty young guy. There, I believe, the similarity ends. Even if you'd rather smoke an old sock than either, you'll find on dissection and examination of both brands that Acid, at half the retail price, is truly a better made cigar than Lars. I do understand that Jon Drew is making up a conventional line of cigars for a Brooklyn cigar store. I imagine it'll be marketed nationally soon. The people on any of the cigar forums and BBSs are not typical of most men who smoke cigars. To people on the boards this is science and art and a hobby, as well. Infusing the tobacco with other flavorings is dam near a sacrilege. Joey, if no one bids on Acid or Lars, you'll be the one to get them at the best price. Ultimately, you'll want to move beyond the aromatics. Steve*R

Anyways, welcome to the board kid..and while we are at it, welcome to the world of economics, advertising, and supply & demand...
